NARRAGANSETT—The town council briefly held its bi-monthly meeting Monday evening, and the two major discussion points were the approval of the Economic Development Plan and the ongoing debate concerning the problems associate with student rentals in Narragansett.
The Economic Development Plan has been in development for the past three years and has gone through multiple metamorphoses, from the small, public brainstorming workshops to the recent presentation of the plan by the Economic Development Committee to the town council. The final step of the conceptualization process was completed Monday, as the town council adopted the overall framework of the plan.
“We have worked tirelessly to get this plan out to the public,” said Town Councilwoman Susan Cicilline-Buonnano. “The action tonight to adopt it should happen.”
The approval, however, is only of the broad economic plan, and will be subject to more public discussion and re-working by the town council in order to develop a pragmatic, implementable economic plan.
The town council also addressed the issue of student rental disturbances in Narragansett during the school year. The chronic problem of disruptive college parties, and the associated effects on local residents and their property, will be more rigorously addressed in the fall.
