Charlestown police investigating Sunoco robbery

CHARLESTOWN – Police are seeking a suspect who is alleged to have committed armed robbery at the Sunoco Station on South County Trail last Thursday night.

According to Chief of Police Col. Jack Shippee, officers responded to a call of armed robbery at the gas station at approximately 9:05 p.m. The suspect has been described as a tall, heavy-set black male wearing a black “hoodie” type sweatshirt and a black ski mask.

Shippee said that the suspect fired a single gunshot from a small caliber handgun during the course of the robbery, though no one was injured during the hold up. Then, Shippee said, the suspect a small amount of cash that was left near the register and fled from the business on foot.

A broadcast was sent out to the surrounding police departments, Shippee said. Officers from Richmond, Hopkinton, South Kingstown, and the Rhode Island State Police responded to assist in the search for the man. Further aiding with the search was the Narragansett Police Department, which provided a K-9 unit to track the suspect, who lost the track by the railroad bridge in Shannock Village.

Shippee said that officers are checking video surveillance from surrounding businesses and detectives are conducting follow-up interviews as the investigation continues.
