Chariho Task Force takes steps to lower youth tobacco use

June 26, 2014

WESTERLY — For Astrid Meijer, Tobacco Program Coordinator of the Chariho Task Force on Substance Abuse Prevention, lowering and ultimately preventing youth tobacco usage is the goal, and she has worked to achieve it step by step.
“The energy you have to get together for this work – it’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon,” she said.
At Friday’s “Tobacco Summit” held at the Westerly Library, Meijer was one of six speakers to address the day’s topic,“Tackling Youth Tobacco use in Rhode Island’s More Rural Communities.”
Meijer spoke about her process of working with local leaders and government officials to create smoke-free public places and local tobacco retailer licenses.
