Chariho students holding benefit concert Friday night

March 24, 2011

WOOD RIVER JCT. – For the second year in a row, Chariho Regional High School students are looking to “Strike a Chord” with a concert to support Doctors Without Borders.

The concept for the event began in January 2010 following the terrible earthquake that struck Haiti. And after seeing the aftermath of the tragedy on the news, Jordan Siniscalchi – then a junior at the high school – said he was inspired to put on the concert.

“When I saw these people who have had so little for so long still lose more, it moved me,” he explained. “And I felt like everyone had to do something to help these people”

He then rounded up a group of like-minded students who, after months of work, put on the first Strike a Chord show March 11 of last year. When it was all said and done, the show raised $2,200 for Doctors Without Borders, a worldwide charity that sends medical aid to areas struck by natural or social disasters.

It wasn't going to just be a one-and-done type of affair, though. Siniscalchi said he corralled a dozen students, from both the Chariho and Westerly high schools, to put on the second Strike a Chord benefit show.

The goal for this year's show, Siniscalchi said, is to raise $2,500 for Doctors Without Borders. And they hope to do so by selling concessions, T-shirts, and hosting a raffle for two guitars – a Fender acoustic DG8S and a Squier '90s Stratocaster Sunburst. Tickets for the raffle are $1 each or six for $5.

The event will feature four hours of performances from local bands such as Minority Soup, Tyler and Joel, Look North, and Brookline Drive. As of Tuesday afternoon, 148 people had already RSVP'd the second Strike a Chord on Facebook.

The show being held this Friday, March 25 from 5 to 9 p.m. in the auditorium of the Chariho Middle School, which is located at 455B Switch Road in Richmond. Tickets for the event are $6, though you can pay $5 if you bring in a canned food item to donate.
