NARRAGANSETT—The Chariho Green eighth-graders weren’t victorious during Thursday night’s playoff game of the Narragansett Summer Basketball League, but they did accomplish something that very few Chariho middle school basketball teams have—an invite to the summer league postseason.
The single-elimination tournament included four teams moving on to play in the playoff rounds: South Kingstown, Chariho Green, and two North Kingstown teams. Green entered as the third best team playing and they would be matched up against a tough gritty South Kingstown team that had one loss on their resume.
The opening round semis between Chariho and South Kingstown got off to encouraging start for the middle school Chargers, but that unexpectedly changed in the second half due to a late dramatic comeback win for SK, which pushed them into the championship game against NK Gold, 42-37.
Costly turnovers, miscommunication, and also good offense from Green caused South Kingstown to fall in a 5-0 hole with only a few minutes into the game, before a timeout was called by the mini-Rebels.
