NORTH SCITUATE — “Let’s dance.”
Those two words can emphasize on having fun and feeling relaxed on a person or group’s free time.
Using those words going into the biggest cross country race of the season against the top teams in the state? A little unorthodox to say the least.
But Chariho boys cross country coach Bill Haberek had quite the method to his madness, especially since he’s been a coaching fixture in the community for more than two decades.
He wanted his talented and poised Chargers to feel relaxed and look at Sunday’s RIIL Cross Country State Championship Meet at Ponaganset High School was something to have fun with.
The majority of the Chariho squad had a grand old time running the three-mile course through the woods on Sunday.
The team was just eight points shy of having the fun moment of a lifetime.
Despite the Chargers having four runners finish within the top six – including an individual state champion – they came up just short of that coveted team state championship on Sunday, finishing second overall with 55 points, just eight more than champion Bishop Hendricken.
