Brooks facing up to 40 years

October 28, 2011

Michael Brooks

NORTH KINGSTOWN – A year after a spree of robberies in Narragansett, East Greenwich and North Kingstown left four elderly women victimized, former Narragansett resident Michael Brooks, 50, pleaded no contest Friday in Rhode Island Superior Court to four counts of first degree robbery.

Brooks could face a maximum sentence of up to 40 years, with 35 to serve.
Justice William Carnes will make the final sentence ruling on Jan. 20 after hearing victim impact statements.

The robberies began on Aug. 29 of last year when Brooks grabbed Barbara Kogut by the throat and ordered her to turn over her purse while she was in her automobile in the Stop & Shop parking lot in Narragansett.

Later that day, he approached Kathleen Mackie in the Dave’s Marketplace parking lot in East Greenwich, stuck a sharp object into her side and demanded her purse.
