Board to research facility options for Charlestown beaches

January 14, 2011

CHARLESTOWN – The Town Council voted unanimously Monday night to create an ad hoc committee that will look into solutions, both permanent and temporary, for the facilities at the Charlestown and Blue Shutters town beaches.

Along with Town Administrator William DiLibero and two members of the public, the committee features one member from the following entities: the Town Council, the Parks and Recreation Commission, the Budget Commission, the Wastewater Management Commission, the Economic Improvement Commission, and the Conservation Commission.

The committee will receive $10,000 funding to obtain professional architectural input on two structure types for the town beaches – both a permanent, stick-built building standing on pylons and a more temporary, roll-off structure. The $10,000 will likely come from the council contingency fund.

The necessity for presenting both options was particularly important to council Vice President Daniel Slattery, who said the town cannot just put one choice in front of its citizenry. And he explained that the council asked the Parks and Recreation Commission and its beach subcommittee to present the council with two options to “look at the cost” and “discuss their merits.”
