It has touched their lives personally and now they hope to touch others’ as they ride to raise money to find a cure. Robert and Holly Grenier of Coventry will be riding in the Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) this Saturday and Sunday. There are ten routes riders can select from and the Grenier’s will be biking the longest distance, 190 miles from Sturbridge, MA to Provincetown, MA. The PMC raises money for both cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through the Jimmy Fund. The town council voted unanimously to pass a resolution opposing the locations of both a medical marijuana compassion center and its growing location. Town Manager Thomas Hoover said the growing location at 7 Clark Mill St. was “a bit closer to an elementary school than we have comfort for.” There is no assurance that the Rhode Island Department of Health (HEALTH) will choose the Coventry location, but three will be approved out of 15 applications received, Hoover said, with one being in the center of the state. Chief of the Coventry Police Department Col. Ronald DaSilva spoke at Council Vice President Laura Flanagan’s request. He said the department was “entirely opposed” to the locations. Battey Avenue is a short, narrow road right on the bike path, he said. |

A minor two-car accident on Nooseneck Hill Road Thursday evening ended with a local man taking his own life. William Temple, 62, of South Main Street, Coventry was transported to Kent for a single gun shot wound to the head, but was later pronounced dead from the self-inflicted injury. Coventry Police were called to the intersection of Nooseneck Hill Road and Harkney Hill Road at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday evening for a “reported minor traffic crash.” When the first officer arrived on scene he quickly realized that he was in store for something much different. According to Coventry Police, Temple, who was the operator of one of the vehicles involved in the minor accident, pointed a gun at the officer and then turned it on himself. Police said Temple then pointed the gun under his chin and sat in his vehicle. Additional officers were called to the scene and negotiations with Temple began. Meanwhile many other officers from several other departments were also called in to help maintain order of the roadway as the heavily-traveled intersection had to be shut down for several hours. After a short time of attempted negotiations, Temple stepped out of his vehicle and moved the gun to his temple and fired a single shot, Coventry Police said. Emergency responders moved in to help Temple and transported him to Kent, where he was later pronounced dead. It doesn’t appear that anyone else was injured in this incident and the roadway was reopened just after 9 p.m. Coventry Police would not comment any further about the incident. |

Students and teachers at Hopkins Hill School got out of bed on Friday and didn’t even bother to get properly dressed. It wasn’t out of carelessness or laziness that they wore their pajamas to school — they were doing it to raise money for the people of Haiti. The teachers, administrators and students in the school decided that they would organize a school-wide fundraiser to help the Rhode Island chapter of the American Red Cross through the fundraiser, Kim O’Connell, a fourth grade teacher at the school said. |

Johnson contractor Rambone Disposal Services was awarded the contract for hauling Coventry recycling after a 5-0 vote at Monday’s council meeting; they also voted to reject the bid made by Providence contractor Coastal Recycling Inc., also with a 5-0 vote. This was the second time that the recycling contract went out to bid for the next three-year cycle because of concerns the council had with the first bidding process, Town Manager Thomas Hoover said at the meeting. |

After more than a year of paying a contractor to provide engineering services for the town, Coventry has a town engineer again, according to Town Manager Thomas Hoover. Although the previous town council collapsed the engineering department in February 2008 in order to save funds for the town, the new council decided they could save more money by hiring a full time engineer, according to Council Vice-President Laura Flanagan. While drafting the 2009-2010 budget, the town council decided to put a full-time engineer position back into the budget, said Council President Raymond Spear. |
