U.S. stocks posted modest gains after an upbeat factory reading eased economic concerns and banks were lifted by earnings out of Europe.. Private sector employment fell sharply in June, according to payroll company ADP. General Motors shares fell after a Merrill Lynch downgrade. Oil prices fluctuated after a mixed inventory data out of the U.S. Conway Gittens reports from New York.
