Noble effort not enough as Avs fall in 3OT

CRANSTON – The banging of the ball against the goal’s board was the cruelest of noises.
For all of regulation and two overtimes, the No. 3-seeded East Greenwich field hockey team took everything No. 1-seeded Barrington had and gave it right back to them.
But 22 seconds into the third overtime, with the crowd at Cranston Stadium on its feet, Barrington’s Hillary Anderson took a pass from Kelly Dolan and rifled it to the back of the goal, sending the Eagles’ into hysteria and the Avengers into hysterics.
“None of us have any regrets. We put our hearts on the field, played as a team and it came down to a lucky goal,” EG’s Lindsey Buckheit said. “Three overtimes is intense and you’re running around … for almost an hour and a half? No regrets.”
“We just played our hearts out,” EG senior Rose Cheng said. “They just got a good shot off.”

Chargers ready for pressure of title game

CRANSTON — For the fifth straight season, there will be a new Division I boys’ soccer champion. The only question when the Saturday’s highly-anticipated contest kicks off at 1:00 p.m. at Rhode Island College is will the new champion be a powerful parochial school that hasn’t won the title since 1998 or the upstart rural squad looking for its first D-I title.
Chariho, which won back-to-back Division II titles in 1994-95, came into the season with lofty expectations after winning I-South last season. The last goal the Chargers talked about in preseason was reaching the state final
Well, after beating North Kingstown Tuesday night, the Chargers are in the state final. The only surprise is the opponent they will be facing. The Chargers thought they would have to overcome La Salle Academy in the final, but the Rams were shocked 2-0 by Hendricken Tuesday night to setup one of the more unlikely finals this decade.

Chargers heading to first D-I title game

CRANSTON — There was only way to describe the Chariho High boys’ soccer team’s two victories over North Kingstown during the regular season. The Chargers, thanks to the play of All-New England forward Nick Dubee dominated the Skippers at the beginning of the season and at the end of the season.
Tuesday night, the Chargers and No. 7 Skippers met on Cranston Stadium’s beautiful FieldTurf for a spot in Saturday’s state final and it was hard to see what formation North coach Kyle Froberg could devise to keep his team in the game against the explosive Chargers.
Froberg, instead of sitting in his own penalty box for 80 minutes, opted to play an open game against the I-South champions. The decision made for great theater and an intriguing game of soccer.
Chariho senior Tyler Zegarzewski opened the scoring with a low shot from outside the penalty area in the first half and Dubee doubled the lead just minutes into the second half. Andy Hess cut the deficit in half at 45 minutes, but the No. 3 Chargers held on for a 2-1 win to reach their first state final.
“This is the first time in Chariho history we’ve made the finals in D-I,” Chariho  all-division goalie Brad Borsay said after a superlative six-save performance. “We’re all pumped up and we’re all excited. We feel like we’re invincible right now, just the adrenaline we have right now is amazing.”

Chariho football team mauled by Huskies

BRISTOL – You can call this Halloween Eve horror story Nightmare on Chestnut Street.
With the script calling for a powerhouse Mount Hope squad hosting senior night and undermanned visitors from Chariho, the ending was inevitable: a 47-0 rout Friday.
The Chargers’ long injury- and flu-ravaged season grew even longer when faced with a dominant backfield and a defense that has allowed just 27 points in six Division II-A games.
By halftime, Mount Hope had scored on four of its five offensive possessions, held a 27-0 lead, mercifully dispatched sophomore tailback Aaron Booth to the bench after 189 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries, and held Chariho to just one first down.

Chariho boys XC finishes in seventh

NORTH SCITUATE—Because the Chariho boys cross country team had already qualified for the state meet by virtue of their 8-1 regular season record in the Southern Division, the Chargers felt no pressure to do well heading into last weekend’s Class Championships.
After seeing the results, however, there is no denying that if Chariho is to accomplish their ultimate goal, and reach New Englands, pressure is exactly what they’ll be feeling when they line up at states on Sunday afternoon.
Chariho finished seventh in a stacked and deep Class A Saturday, and that result does not bode well for the Chargers’ hopes of cracking the top-six at states.
Chariho was led by sophomore Dan Kilcoyne and junior Ian LaPlume, who finished 12th and 16th respectively with times just over 17 minutes.
After Kilcoyne and LaPlume, however, there was a noticeable drop in boys in Charger green.

Charger girls come up big at Class meet

NORTH SCITUATE—The smile on Diane Leith’s face said it all.
Mere moments after the Chariho girls cross country team finished sixth overall in last Saturday’s Class A Meet, a finish that earned them a spot, as a team, into this weekend’s state meet, Leith and her girls gathered at the Charger tent smiling, hugging and celebrating their accomplishment.
They might not have won a championship, but it was close enough. The Chargers are going to states. Their season-long mission? Accomplished.
Chariho freshman Elizabeth Hansen turned in a huge performance in her first big varsity meet, clocking in at just over 22 minutes to finish 22nd overall as the Chargers racked up 196 team points to finish behind just LaSalle, Cranston West, North Kingstown, Coventry and Cumberland in Class A.
The sixth-place showing was Chariho’s best since 2001 and assured them a spot in their third state meet in four years.
Not bad for a little program with just 15 total athletes on it.
“They did awesome,” Leith said. “They did so well. It was really good, almost everyone had really great races.”
Chariho was led by Hansen, who just missed out on taking home All-Class honors, but nonetheless came up huge.
“Liz really had an awesome race as a freshman,” Leith said. “She came in 22nd, which is one place away from all-class, she was obviously disappointed but since her time was so good, she was still happy and so it was really good.”

Mariners fall short vs. Purple
Thursday, 05 November 2009
NARRAGANSETT – With four shots to score the game-tying touchdown from the Classical 10-yard line, the Narragansett football team’s drive ended at the four as the Mariners lost 20-14 to Classical in a non-league game that was the first night game in Narragansett school history.
After a seven-yard Willie Perkins run gave the Mariners first-and-goal from the 10 with just over 2 minutes, 30 seconds left, quarterback Mark Griffith gained five yards on a draw and Perkins picked up a yard on the next play to give Narragansett two shots from the four.
On third down, Perkins was stopped at the line of scrimmage and Griffith (12 carries, 52 yards rushing) was stopped on the quarterback option right at the four to give the ball back to Classical with 1:42 left. Classical picked up a first down on its first play and punted, but the clock ran out during Matt Eldridge’s 13-yard return.
Perkins led the Mariners with 88 yards rushing on 16 carries, including a 16-yard scamper to the right for Narragansett’s first score that, teamed with senior Tyler Casey’s extra point, gave the Mariners a 7-6 lead 54 seconds into the second quarter.
It looked like Narragansett would immediately get the ball back with a chance to build on the lead, but on fourth-and-8 from the Narragansett 41, Classical quarterback Timothy Eng found Alain Moise up the left sideline for a touchdown and a 12-7 lead with 8:09 left in the half.
The Mariners answered with a 10-play, 58-yard drive, which was lengthened on a fake punt on fourth-and-2 from the 50 by Matt Eldridge, who gained six yards on the play.
Six plays later, Eldridge (13 carries, 47 yards) ran left, broke a tackle and sped toward the left pylon for the go-ahead score.
The halftime lead was short-lived, as Classical’s Gdenue Grimes picked off Griffith (1-for-7, 11 yards passing, 2 INTs) at the Narragansett 45 and ran it back to the 34. On the very next play, Classical running back Gian Razzino (2 carries, 36 yards) took a handoff right, back a nice cut back and broke upfield for a 34-yard touchdown.

Rebels hold off Shea
Thursday, 05 November 2009
SOUTH KINGSTOWN—If a school-wide flu couldn’t slow down the South Kingstown football team, nothing was going to, not even the speed possessed by Shea High School.
Despite its billing as a matchup of the first place and last place teams in Division II-B, Friday night’s Rebels-Raiders matchup was actually a tight, closely contested battle for 22 minutes.
The rest of the game? Not so much.
SK quarterback Ben Hamill shined on Senior Night for the Rebels, going 9-of-14 through the air for 189 yards and two touchdowns, classmate Zach LeValley had two interceptions, one which he returned for a 35-yard touchdown, and the Rebels kept pace for the top seed in Division II-B with a 51-32 win over Shea.
For SK coach Eric Anderson, Friday was the type of game you just try to survive.
All week long, the Rebels practiced without a myriad of starters, all in and out of school with the flu.
Still, when it mattered most, South found a way to put enough plays together for a victory. That’s just what good teams do.
“We only really had one decent day of practice all week,” Anderson said. “So I think that’s kind of what you saw in the first quarter was a lot of guys who hadn’t really played as a unit all week and I don’t care how good you are, if you don’t practice, that’s the result that you’re going to get.”
Shea dominated South Kingstown in the first period, using its speed to break off long gains and hassle Hamill in the pocket.
The Raiders led twice Friday, striking first blood on a 48-yard interception return by Henry Pires in the first quarter and later going up 14-6 on a 32-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Josh Burgo to senior Manny Baptista.
But that’s where the good news ended for Shea. From the two-minute mark of the second quarter on, it was all South Kingstown, all the time.
The Rebels scored two touchdowns in the final 2:17 of the second period, the first a three-yard run by Hamill, the second an eight-yard pass from Hamill to Justin Favreau and, try as they may, Shea was never competitive in the second half.
South had four running backs find the end zone in all Friday, with senior Patrick Gee leading the charge with a 98-yard performance.
With the win, South Kingstown improved to 5-1 on the season and thanks to an early-season win over Coventry, the Rebels can clinch the No. 1 seed in Division II-B with a win over Toll Gate this weekend.
“We’ve just got to get back at it next week,” Anderson said. “We have to focus on Toll Gate and we’ve got to look at the next week as it’s really important to clinch. I want to be back at this field, I don’t want to be able to be on the road for the playoffs so it’s important, this game is important.”
SK-Toll Gate kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday night.

South boys knocked out in overtime

WOOD RIVER JUNCTION — Heart unfortunately lasted only 85 minutes for the South Kingstown boys’ soccer team on Thursday night.
Charger forward Andrew Maldonado scored the golden goal for Chariho in the fifth minute of the first overtime, handing South Kingstown a gut-wrenching, season-ending 1-0 defeat.
Chariho’s Innocent Jacob worked the ball up the left touchline and passed it quickly to fellow forward Nicholas Dubee, who made a slight, yet effective pass with the back of his right foot over to Maldonado and the junior forward ripped a hard, right-footed shot inside the box into the goal just inside the left post.

Mariners a step closer to D-III championship

NARRAGANSETT—When you’re made up of a large nucleus of freshman and sophomores, as is the case for the Narragansett girls soccer team this season, there’s just no telling how the postseason is going to affect you.
Some players respond to the pressure of the one-and-done atmosphere the playoffs bring, some let their nerves get the better of them and fall flat on their face.
Want to take a guess which category Mariner freshman Carla Porras falls into? Look no further than last Thursday’s Narragansett victory over Johnston.
Playing in her first-ever high school postseason game, Porras looked more like a season pro than a nervous newbie for the Mariners, scoring three times in the first half and once more in the second period to lead Narragansett past the Panthers, 6-4, bringing the team one win closer to the D-III title game.

Strong debut for SK

SOUTH KINGSTOWN—Ever since they walked off the field at Rhode Island College last November, everything the South Kingstown girls soccer team has done has been in preparation for getting back to the postseason.
Their 14-2 regular-season record? Big whoop. Their clinching of the No. 1 seed in Division I-South? Who cares?
The only thing the Rebels have thought about ever since that moment 12 months ago has been getting back to the playoffs, getting back to RIC, getting another crack at the title that so narrowly eluded them last fall.
And judging by what they did to Barrington last Thursday, it might not be wise to stand in their way.
With an energy and a drive not many teams can match, South Kingstown demolished the Eagles Thursday, winning 7-1 as freshman forward Emily McClarnon notched a hat trick in her first postseason game.
