Bike Day's today at South County YMCA

April 14, 2012

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – In an effort to promote healthy living, the town of South Kingstown, in partnership with the South County YMCA will host the first “Bike Day” on Saturday, April 14, from 10 to 2 p.m. at the YMCA at 165 Broad Rock Road, Wakefield.

The free event has sprung from the Healthy Places By Design initiative – which provided advice on how the town can help its residents be more active and eat healthier.

“[Bike Day] promotes the use of the bike path and the fun of riding a bike,” says Vincent Murray, director of planning.

With the help of town Parks and Recreation Staff and local bike shops, including Narragansett Bike and the W.E. Stedman Co. Bike shops, those in need of a bike will have the opportunity to take home a free, refurbished bike. As part of Bicycle Recycle, the town asked community members to drop off gently used bikes to the YMCA by last Saturday. These bikes will be donated to foster children in the area.
