NARRAGANSETT- The Narragansett School Committee reviewed the athletic budgets for Narragansett High School and Narragansett Pier School athletic during a special meeting on Wednesday.
Member Keith Ranaldi requested that the committee review the collected and organized data for expenses, revenues and donations regarding the athletic programs at the two schools.
âInformation is strength so thank you for providing this for us,â said Ranaldi. âThings are good right now in our athletic program but we have way more potential, and that is why I brought this up to review today.â
The committee was also able to review the student participation numbers by sport for each school and the calculated per athlete spending. Superintendent Kathy Sipala brought to the attention of the committee that in the per student calculation, it only included district dollars expended; fundraising and Booster Club donations were not calculated for individual sports.
The data gathering was the collective effort of the athletic directors, school secretaries involved in keeping the ledgers on these activities, Payroll Clerk Lyn Budaj, Transportation Director Dave Correira, and parent volunteer and booster treasurer, Cathy Rost at NHS, said Sipala.
NHS Athletic Director Richard Adham was present during the meeting and said that he was pleased with the current support from the community.
âThere is no small school in the state that offers what we offer, our kids have so many opportunities for a tiny school system,â said Adham. âWe try to do as much as we can, and we try to get teams to help with fundraisers, or sometimes booster clubs or sometimes people donate money, it all helps.â
Sipala said that it is not unusual for groups such as the Booster Club to support school athletic programs and that each effort is appreciated.
âIs it typical for other groups to support the program? Absolutely,â said Sipala. âI donât believe we could do it alone and I think also that this is what builds community and we have great support from our community.â
Due to the fact that resultant reports took considerable time on the part of all involved, Sipala said that she made the decision to ask for data for one year only.
âAthletics is important in Narragansett Schools. Our System Design Strategic Plan calls for the development of the whole child and this is one aspect of that mission,â said Sipala. âA review of this data evidences that athletics in Narragansett is strongly supported by the district and enhanced by the generosity of Boosters Clubs and fundraising efforts by the students and athletes themselves.â
School Committee President Tammy McNeiece encouraged Adham to keep the committee updated on the needs of the students at the high school.
âWe need to know what the needs are because as we move forward with the greenhouse, big things are happening,â said McNeiece.
For the future needs of the high school, Adham said he hopes to find the opportunity to add a weight room facility to the high school.
âWe would like to have a weight room facility for the high school, I would love that,â said Adham. âThat would be a wonderful thing for the students and would be great if we could do that.
As of now, the committee decided that they will have to discuss the request for a weight facility during a future meeting.
