Art & antique sale coming to Frosty Drew

June 29, 2011

CHARLESTOWN -- On Saturday, July 16, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., those who love the art and antiques will find an exciting new cultural event and sale happening in Ninigret Park. The antique and art sale is called the Sea Star Marketplace and is being put on by the Frosty Drew Nature Center & Observatory, a local nonprofit educational organization, as a fund-raiser.

Carefully selected antique dealers, artists, craftsmen, and nonprofits will set up their booths in the large grassy field next to the Frosty Drew Nature Center & Observatory.

Among those coming to Ninigret Park are antique dealers and makers of hand-crafted gold, silver, and glass jewelry; woodworking; copper items; oil paintings and water colors; quilts; photography; painted furniture; mosaics and stone work; and more. For example, Kara Scott will exhibit and sell her exquisite gold and silver jewelry, and Nate Eastman, a beautiful 4.5-foot mural of a mermaid that can be set in a kitchen or bathroom floor or in an area around a pool or sauna. The Charlestown Historical Society will sell signed and numbered original John Lutes prints done for Charlestown's Bicentennial
in the 1970s. In addition, duck decoys will be offered for sale, as will many other antique items.

There will be entertainment and food throughout the day. The Ladies of the Rolling Pin will perform as will Sol, a well-known ensemble consisting of guitar and vocalist. Not to be missed will be clams and oysters on the half shell and chowder by the Matunuck Oyster Bar. Activities for children will be supplied by the youth group from the National Wildlife Refuge Complex next to Ninigret Park, and John Varadian, accompanied by his guitar, will entertain youngsters with songs.

Frosty Drew Nature Center & Observatory will hold this celebration of arts, crafts, and antiques in Ninigret Park annually. Proceeds from the sale of booth space go directly to support its educational programs for young and old and to provide public programs at the Frosty Drew Observatory.

Space to exhibit and sell is still available. Vsit for application forms. You can also e-mail or call 364-9508. Rain date for event is July 17.
