COVENTRYâ Multiple commercial properties in Coventry have filed claims against the Central Coventry Fire District looking for repayment from a two-tiered tax bill that was sent to them during 2009-2012.
Special Master for the district Richard Land explained that he objected to the petition, which was filed March 13, 2013, because of the timeliness of the claims.
Eleven Proofs of Claims have been filed with the Superior Court.
âThe commercial taxpayers are asserting that they are entitled to get money back because they paid at a tiered tax rate,â he said. âTheir claim was it was illegal.â
When asked if the tax rate was, in fact, illegal, Land said, âwhether the tax is illegal or not is not something I can tell you today, but I can tell you that another Superior Court ruled in a separate district that a similar tax is illegal.â
