EG girls soccer falls in title game

November 15, 2010

The East Greenwich girls soccer team handled every team in the state this season, and the one it couldn't beat the Avengers in Sunday's D-I final.
After playing 77 minutes of scoreless soccer, La Salle's MacKenzie Meehan scored on a header with 2:46 left in the match, giving the Rams a 1-0 win over East Greenwich in the D-I final.
It's the fourth straight season the Avengers had their season ended at the hands of La Salle.

WEB EXCLUSIVE: Crusaders and Oakers vie for Division I title

November 13, 2010

WAKEFIELD—When the Coventry girls volleyball team walked off the Prout High School gymnasium floor as victims of an eye-opening 3-0 sweep at the hands of the Crusaders last month, Oakers coach Leo Bush knew that one moment would define his team for the rest of the season.
“They served us off the court,” Bush said.
It was a rare moment of weakness for the Oakers, who hadn’t lost a game prior to that one … and haven’t lost one since. It was a moment in which Bush knew his girls would learn a lot about themselves.

WEST GREENWICH – Even as the No. 1 seed in the Division III girls soccer playoffs, Exeter-West Greenwich coach Kevin Fraser was worried.
Thanks to Monday’s storm that postponed the first round to Tuesday, Knights hadn’t played in 10 days and even in those final two games – a tie with Pilgrim on Oct. 28 and a win over Westerly on Oct. 29 – the team didn’t have its best showing.

After being pushed back a day thanks to rainouts earlier in the week, four local girls soccer teams will play with a berth to the finals on the line today.

In Division I, South Kingstown plays East Greenwich at East Greenwich High School at 6 p.m. EGHS was chosen as the site for the semifinals before the season started.

In Division II, Exeter-West Greenwich plays Ponaganset at Cranston Stadium at 6 p.m.

In Division III, Narragansett plays Burrillville at 4 p.m. at Gaudet Middle School in Middletown.

Wednesday's playoff results

November 11, 2010

Four area teams played in playoff games Wednesday, and things didn't go great for three of them.

In boys soccer, South Kingstown did all it could to try and stop undefeated Barrington, but the Rebels fell in a tough game, 2-1. In the nightcap, North Kingstown played No. 2-seed Shea and lost, 3-0.

In girls volleyball, two local teams met in the Division II semifinal.
While neither team played especially well, Exeter-West Greenwich's powerful serving and play at the net allowed the Knights to top West Warwick, 27-25, 23-25, 25-17, 25-14, advancing to their first title game since 1999.

KINGSTON—The Coventry girls volleyball team was forced to sit and wait in the stands at URI’s Keaney Gymnasium for well over an hour Tuesday night as Prout and Mount St. Charles battled back and forth in an epic, five-game showdown that the Crusaders ultimately won 21-25, 25-15, 20-25, 25-11, 19-17 to earn a spot in the Division I Finals.
It’s safe to say the Oakers didn’t mind, however, as what happened when they finally hit the floor was a moment eight years in the making.
