Wizards getting their groove back

February 15, 2011

NEWPORT — West Warwick forward Ryan Lawton’s 25 points kept his team in Monday’s night game with Division II’s top team, Rogers. His 21 rebounds created numerous second-chance and transition opportunities for the Wizards. And his six blocks intimidated the Vikings in the lane.
But the junior’s biggest play in the 60-57 victory over Rogers came on one of his three assists.
With Lawton and fellow junior Max Motroni playing a two-man game on the left side of the court, Lawton kicked the ball out from the post and Motroni hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 36.1 seconds remaining in the contest.

Wilson saves the day as URI tops Charlotte

February 12, 2011

KINGSTON – Whether or not the University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team deserved to beat Charlotte Saturday afternoon is irrelevant.
It didn’t matter how it looked, because when the Rams left the Ryan Center, the scoreboard read Rams 71, Guest 70.
Akeem Richmond missed a jumper from the right corner with three seconds left in overtime, but Jamal Wilson was in the right place at the right time – and got away with the right move – for a putback just before the buzzer in overtime, giving the Rams the dramatic one-point win to finish off an incredible second half for URI.

Garrick's simply grand

WEST WARWICK — When you mention the name Garrick, immediately the West Warwick Wizards boys’ basketball team comes to mind and images conjure up of Tom and Stace filling the baskets on a nightly basis back in the early 80’s and again in 2000.
Both would go onto score over 1,000 points in their illustrious careers sporting the black and orange.
Their legacy left an indelible mark on fans and assured the name Garrick would forever be synonymous with other greats who have played boys basketball in West Warwick alongside Bill Robinson and Chuck Palumbo.

Billy Baron speaks about his decision to transfer

February 9, 2011

Billy Baron - son of URI men's basketball coach Jim - made his first statements to the media since announcing he was transferring from Virginia to URI.
Here are a few of his comments.

(On the decision)
-It’s good to be back home. I missed my family, I missed being home. Just being able to play for my father, you know. Virginia was great, a lot of great opportunities coming out of there, great people there, great coaching staff. Just the fact of coming home, you only have one of them.

Wizards bounce back with victory

February 9, 2011

WOOD RIVER JUNCTION – For most basketball teams, the recent snowfall of the region was not welcomed as it put a halt to recent games.
But for the West Warwick Wizards, it may have been a blessing in disguise.
After losing three straight games last week, the Wizards’ game Friday against Westerly was cancelled which afforded the team much needed practice time and a chance to regroup and gain its confidence.
Chariho was the unfortunate victim of a rejuvenate Wizards’ squad as they dismantled the Chargers 77-44.

Wizards finish second at division meet

February 8, 2011

PROVIDENCE — A little dose of humility will hurt on first application, but the benefits of it will pay off in the long run.
Back on Jan. 17 in the third dual meet – and oddly enough, the final dual meet of the season – the West Warwick boys indoor track team, even though it swept both Smithfield and Cranston East, were a bit humbled because its individual performances.
Since that proverbial wake-up call, the coaching staff in the ensuing practices told the Wizards that they were better than that and the team hasn’t peaked yet.
