PROVIDENCE – There was some doubt to whether the West Warwick Wizards were even going to qualify for the R.I. State Basketball Tournament after their loss to Westerly in the Division II playoffs.
But a Barrington Eagles loss to Rogers in those same Division II playoffs opened up the door for the Wizards to get invited to the party and last night they took advantage.
Playing as the No. 13 seed, West Warwick advanced in the tournament with a 71-64 win over the No. 4 seed cross-town rival Coventry Oakers.

WEST WARWICK — The West Warwick girls basketball team, for the second time this season, defeated Tolman at home. And while the score, 63-54, indicates the Wizards were comfortable Division II first-round playoff winners, the game was still up in the air with three minutes remaining.
Thanks to 20 points from center Jenna Ayala and 13 from guard Janelle Gonzalez, the Tigers gave the No. 3 Wizards all they could handle.

KINGSTON – You can’t spell ‘late-season collapse’ without URI.
Technically you can, but there’s no denying that when it comes to winning when it matters most, the University of Rhode Island men’s basketball has not performed when it counted.
The last three seasons URI has had a chance to puts itself in the NCAA Tournament, only to flame out late in A-10 play, followed by struggles in the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
This year is a little different.

WESTERLY — Designed plays look nice on dry-erase boards, but it’s the top-level players who make the decision and are usually the reason a play works, fails or is changed in favor of something completely different.
Monday night, in the latest installment of the best Division II boys basketball rivalry, West Warwick’s Max Motroni knew with his team trailing by a point with 16 seconds left in the game that coach Richard Grenier wanted him to drive to the hoop. Motroni saw the lane was closed and proceeded to bury a 25-foot 3-pointer.

URI women have a lot to talk about after loss

February 16, 2011

KINGSTON – There was a lot Cathy Inglese could have been talking about for the 30-plus minutes following the University of Rhode Island women’s basketball team’s 64-43 loss to Fordham Wednesday night.
She could have been yelling about the fact the Rams shot just 35.4 percent from the floor, or that they were outrebounded 37-28, or that they were outscored 51-23 in the final 25:10 of the game. She may have been discussing geopolitics, fashion trends or how the fans must have felt to watch a truly awful performance.
