Coventry wins state title

July 25, 2013

WEST WARWICK — They didn’t want to sound cocky, but the Coventry Babe Ruth 13-year-old all-stars entered last week’s state tournament at McCarthy Field believing they were the team to beat.
After tough wins over Cranston and Warwick PAL, it seemed Coventry would have some competition for the state title.
That’s when Coventry took its game to another level. After smothering North Providence/Smithfield in the winners’ bracket final, Coventry delivered its finest performance in the tournament in Saturday’s state final against a solid Cranston squad.

July 25, 2013

NARRAGANSETT—A little over two hours after the Exeter-West Greenwich Junior Little League All-Stars’ season came to an end the EWG seniors followed suit.
Exeter dropped a 9-0 decision to Riverside – its second loss to the District 2 champs in as many games – Tuesday at Sprague Park to bring its summer run to an end.
As was the case in Saturday’s 8-2 loss to starting pitcher C.J. Woods, Exeter-West Greenwich couldn’t get anything going against Riverside starter Ethan Gervais.

The defeat came on the heels of a close 4-3 victory over Rumford – in a game that started late Saturday night and finished Sunday afternoon – and a 12-3 loss to Edgewood Sunday night.

The team dominated once again last Friday night as they defeated Warwick Continental 10-0 in five innings in the championship game of the District 3 Tournament at Wilson Park.
“Tough to put into words, really. Awful proud of these guys,” said Wickford manager Joe Walsh. “Just a lot of work and they all just came together.
“…District Championship? 10-0? I’ll take that every day of the week.”

NK enjoying success with new faces

NARRAGANSETT—In each of the past few seasons the North Kingstown boys basketball team has lost strong players to graduation but had enough veterans return to stay amongst the state’s elite programs.
This summer, however, has marked the beginning of a drastic change for long-time coach Aaron Thomas and his Skippers.
North graduated the top seven players from its rotation this spring and have had to rely on lesser-used reserves from last season in Grant Gillis, Jake Mansfield, Matt Madoian and Chris Lenox.

Chargers honing their skills

Despite his team’s 2-5 record Chariho coach Corey Downey feels his squad is right where it needs to be in the Narragansett Summer Boys Basketball League to see success this winter.
“This summer hasn’t really been about wins, it’s been about figuring out what our strengths and weaknesses are offensively and defensively,” Downey said. “We’re just continuing to play hard and play good defense whatever it is at that time whether it is man or zone.

Of course, they didn’t expect to win the game in the manner they did.

SK rolls into playoffs on hot streak

July 25, 2013

WEST WARWICK – It is one of the oldest clichés in the game of baseball; “It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon.”
It is also a cliché that may end up defining the summer of 2013 for the South Kingstown Post 39 baseball team.
After struggling early in the season – opening up with a 3-9 record – Post 39 turned it on over the final eight days of the regular season to roll into the playoffs as one of the hottest teams in the league.
SK went 6-3 in that span, which culminated with their 6-5 win over West Warwick Post Two on Monday night at McCarthy Field.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN—When the streak of state championships finally ended for the South Kingstown boys tennis team this spring initially there was shock.
Of course, how could there not be?
The Rebels entered the 2013 season having won 14 Division I Championships in a row only to see their run end with a late May loss to LaSalle in the semifinals.
Saturday – nearly two months after the end of the streak – former SK players from nearly the past two decades gathered at the tennis courts at Broad Middle School for the inaugural Alumni Doubles Tournament.
