Oakers aiming for D-III title

September 5, 2013

COVENTRY — The Coventry girls tennis team can no longer rely on the ‘A Team’ to carry it to the Division III finals. After the graduation of three of the team’s four singles players, girls whose first name don’t being with an A are going to have to fill in the holes.
The only returning member of the ‘A-Team’ junior Abby James is back at No. 1 singles and she is joined by a number of talented returning players who remember the sting of last year’s D-III title loss to Mt. Hope at Slater Park.

Skippers fighting to finish fall above .500

September 5, 2013

The wait has been long, but it is finally over.
“It’s good to finally have a competitive day,” said coach Victoria Tefft on Friday night as her North Kingstown girls volleyball squad prepared for their injury fund matches against Narragansett and East Greenwich.
Friday’s matches marked the final tune up for the NK Spikers as they prepare to make a run at their first winning season in three years.

NK looking to make strides

September 5, 2013

Year two of the rebuilding process for the North Kingstown football team is underway and so far things have gone well for the Skippers.
“We’re getting there,” says coach Joe Gilmartin, who led NK to a 1-6 record in Division II-B (4-7 overall) after three years in which the team’s only win came in a non-league game against Division III East Greenwich.
Gilmartin knows though, if the Skippers are going to be competitive they have a long way to go with the likes of West Warwick, Cumberland, Rogers, Central, Shea, Pilgrim and St. Raphael all competing in Division II-B.

New era for EWG, Sullivan

September 5, 2013

Anne Sullivan has seen a good amount of success in her four years as head coach of the Exeter-West Greenwich girls tennis team.
Playing in Division III, the Scarlet Knights have never finished lower than third or won less than eight matches while under her care, twice winning double digit matches and once bringing home a division title.
This season will be a little different for Sullivan, however. Last season marked the end of the high school careers of the class she came in with, bringing on a new collection of players to lead this year’s Knights.

Battle tested vets to lead North

September 5, 2013

The past few seasons the North Kingstown field hockey team has managed to stay competitive despite playing with a relatively young roster.
Last fall the Skippers went 10-5-1 in Division I-South and clinched the No. 5 seed in the postseason, but dropped a first-round matchup with East Greenwich 3-0.
Fortunately for NK it only lost four seniors from that team and return this season with a veteran lineup, the majority of whom have been battle tested.

Knights should be in playoff hunt

September 5, 2013

When it came time to win critical games against the likes of Smithfield and North Smithfield last season the Exeter-West Greenwich football team fell just short, subsequently missing out on the playoffs with a 3-5 record.
Nonetheless, it was another year in which the Knights were in the hunt for a playoff berth, which has become the norm for EWG over the past seven years.
This season Exeter-West Greenwich has a strong core of returners that should once again keep the team competitive.

EWG building around Donnelly, Bridges

September 5, 2013

COVENTRY — The three-time defending Division II champion Exeter-West Greenwich girls volleyball team are doing a little rebuilding after graduating a number of talented players.
Of course, the rebuilding should go pretty smoothly with second-team All-State middle hitter Jennifer Donnelly back for her junior campaign. Donnelly and fellow middle hitter Jenna Bridges form the most menacing middle duo in II-South and give coach Josh Bednarczyk a solid platform to build this season’s team.

Drljaca to enjoy her bid at repeat

September 5, 2013

Aleksandra Drljaca counts it as the “most special” moment of her short high school career.
To date, however, the now senior’s 2012 season has also gone down as the finest in East Greenwich High School girls tennis history. Last fall, Drljaca rarely lost a set during her junior campaign, winning 36-of-38, let alone a match as she went a perfect 18-0 in Interscholastic League play en route to becoming the first female in the school’s history to capture the RIIL individual state tennis championship.

EG Volleyball starts strong

September 5, 2013

WARWICK – It was a good start to the season for the East Greenwich High School girls volleyball team when they opened up their 2013 schedule on Tuesday night. The team went on the road for their opener and thoroughly dismantled the Warwick Vets Hurricanes in a three-game sweep; 25-10, 25-15, 25-11.

Raw talent to fill the voids for East Greenwich Football

September 5, 2013

After four straight season finishing at or below .500, the East Greenwich High School football team took a giant leap in 2012. They posted a 7-1 record during the regular season, finishing second in Division III, before advancing to the championship game where they came up just short against undefeated Middletown, losing the Super Bowl 33-21.
