SK rolls Central Falls, into semis

November 7, 2013

WAKEFIELD – Throughout the regular season scoring had been a bane for the South Kingstown boys soccer team.
Though the Rebels were near the top of the Division I standings, that was mostly because of a defense that ranked second, giving up less than a goal a game, rather than their middle of the pack offense.
The playoffs, however, are like a new season and it was a new team that took to the pitch at Curtis Corner Middle School on Saturday night as the South Kingstown offense sparked for four goals as they ran Central Falls 4-1 in the RIIL Division I quarterfinals.

After knocking of the mighty Rams last postseason in a shootout La Salle got its revenge, holding off the Rebels for a 3-0 win.
Friday night South was in a hole almost from the moment it stepped on the field as 57 seconds into the game La Salle’s Haley Puglia got a foot on a bouncing ball in the box to put it past SK goalkeeper Bridget Montle.

EAST GREENWICH—The unlikely ride for the Chariho field hockey team came to an end Wednesday at East Greenwich’s Carcieri Field.
The Chargers hung tough early against No. 2 seed La Salle but ultimately couldn’t get anything going offensively against the Rams’ defense in a 2-0 defeat.
“The first 20 minutes of the game I felt like we dominated,” Chariho coach Johannah LaFountain said. “I thought our strategy was working and then I felt like they put some pressure on, made some changes and just kind of everything fell apart from there.”

After the overtime sessions the two teams went into the shootout where goalkeeper Nolan Cooney made two saves and freshman Brendan Jordan’s score – the seventh attempted by EG – secured the victory.

WEST GREENWICH—There will be a new champion of Division III boys soccer this season.
Exeter-West Greenwich knew it would be in for a tough time this fall with only senior captains Jack Livsey and Joe Micelli returning from last year’s unbeaten championship team yet the Knights persevered en route to a 9-5-1 record in the regular season.
Unfortunately for Exeter – the No. 6 seed in the tournament – it ran into a tough Davies squad in the opening round and the Patriots handed the Knights a 2-1 loss.

PAWTUCKET – Sometimes the best things in life are those least expected.

Not even the Mariners themselves.

Loss to North drops Prout to 4th in division

October 30, 2013

WAKEFIELD – Things had been going well for the Prout girls volleyball team. Winners of five straight and coming together as a squad with the postseason beckoning in little over a week, things were going in the right direction.
Until North Kingstown showed up in the school’s gym on Tuesday night that is.
While the Crusaders fared better than the 25-15, 25-17, 25-12 hurt they suffered in their season opener against the Skippers, they could never distance themselves from their opponents Tuesday, while North pulled away with the 25-18, 25-22, 25-22 win.
