Lady Rams get ready to tip-off the season

KINGSTON- The University of Rhode Island Women’s basketball team will start the 2014 season Nov. 14 with a new coach and a new "winning mind" philosophy.
Coach Daynia La-Force has brought her nearly 20 years of coaching experience to URI and has been rebuilding the defense and offense to improve the womens basketball program.

Champions crowned: Chariho Unified Volleyball

PROVIDENCE— It was a dream come true for the Chariho unified volleyball team this past week during their Division III playoff run.
After finishing in second place for the last two unified volleyball seasons, Chariho didn’t want to disappoint this time around.
In the opening playoff round, the Chargers defeated fifth-seeded Westerly to be able to move onto the semifinal match versus top-seeded North Kingstown. The defeat against the Bulldogs was the team’s second victory against the team during the 2014 campaign and that rallied the charge this past Thursday and Sunday.

EAST GREENWICH— With the Chariho field hockey team finishing the regular season in first place of the Division II-South standings and Cumberland just coming up short of the first seed in Division II-North behind Classical, it was bound to be an extremely competitive semifinal playoff match between the two teams this past Thursday night at East Greenwich High School.

Chargers Girls soccer finishes season with loss

COVENTRY — As successful as the undefeated Coventry girls soccer team was this season, the reality was the Oakers’ Division II quarterfinal opponent, No. 9 Chariho, came into Saturday’s match with more playoff pedigree.
While the Chargers reached the Division III semifinals in 2012 and also won a first-round playoff game this season, the Oakers hadn’t won a playoff game since Donielle Mattoon scored the game-winning goal in the 2006 Division II final against Prout.

Avengers compete in state cross country championships

PONAGANSET- The Cross Country season came down to one final meet on Sunday afternoon at Ponaganset High School. The sleet and rain couldn't slow down these runners, as the Boys and Girls Cross Country teams gathered for one more race to see who would qualify for the New England Regional Race next weekend.
For the Girls, La Salle Academy repeated as State Champions, winning the meet by 56 points.

Avengers get big road win against Hope

PROVIDENCE— The Avengers football team is riding a four-game winning streak entering last Saturday’s contest with Hope at Hope High School. That streak continued in dominant fashion with a 34-0 rout of the Blue Wave.
It was a messy, muddy game in Providence on Saturday and that forced both teams to rely heavily on using a rushing attack to carry themselves to victory, yet the Avengers were the only team that successfully executed moving the ball down the field on offense.

Avengers advance to Semi-finals

EAST GREENWICH- The East Greenwich Avengers have been one of the best teams in volleyball all season long. The West Warwick Wizards were looking for the upset victory in Monday night’s quarterfinal game at East Greenwich High School.
For the Wizards, their season came to a close on Monday night, as the team was defeated in four sets by the Avengers, 3-1.
Despite a 1-1 lead going into the third set, the Avengers went on to win two straight sets to earn the 3-1 victory, advancing to the Semi-final round on Thursday night.

NORTH KINGSTOWN – The North Kingstown boys’ soccer team reeled off a couple of different looking victories in its first two games of the 2014 University Orthopedics Division I championship tournament, beating Barrington then Central High School by a combined five points with only two days in between.

WEST WARWICK — You couldn’t help but feel Saturday’s Division II-B football game between undefeated North Kingstown and West Warwick was a changing-of-the-guard moment for both teams.
The Skippers’ 27-0 victory at Maznicki Field earned North Kingstown the No. 1 seed from their side of the division in the upcoming Division II playoffs, while the defeat means West Warwick’s reign as Division II champions came to an end thanks to a fifth-straight defeat.

COVENTRY — It wasn’t always pretty and it certainly wasn’t perfect, but the three-time defending state champion Coventry volleyball team, led by seniors Jill Ward, Lizzy Carpenter, Jessica Maguire, Katie Cronin and Kelly DiBiasio, made their final regular-season home match a memorable one.
Ward, who will go down as one of the best players in the program’s storied history, had 16 kills, nine digs and two aces, while Carpenter chipped in with 10 kills to lead the Oakers to a 25-17, 25-16, 25-20 Division I-South victory over visiting Chariho Friday night.
