Local schools not sure how to react to funding formula

Exeter-West Greenwich Regional School District Superintendent Dr. Thomas Geismar has an expression he likes to refer to that prevents him from overreacting to bad news.
“I always say to myself, don’t cry before you’re hurt,” Geismar said in a phone interview yesterday afternoon.

NK students ready for West Side Story

NORTH KINGSTOWN—Within the darkened auditorium, the only light coming from the stage, over 50 North Kingstown High School students sacrificed their Saturday for a 12-hour day of rehearsals for “West Side Story” last weekend. The classic story of star-crossed lovers came to amazing life during the cue-to-cue light rehearsal, which started at 10 a.m. and lasted until well into the evening hours.
The students have been putting in seven-hour rehearsal days after school since January, according to director Norma Caiazza.

On February 17 twelve representatives from several local Walmart stores visited and toured Sargent Rehabilitation Center. Local Walmart Store Managers, Market Assistant and Good Works Coordinators … staff who identify non-profit organizations and programs in the community that Walmart wishes to support with a monetary contribution…came bearing a gift. Sargent Center was presented with a $5000 contribution to support services for children and adults with disabilities.

West Side Story coming to NKHS this weekend!

At North Kingstown High School, nobody finds the drama of the TV show “Glee” over-the-top. Not compared to the real-life challenges of preparing to present “West Side Story” later this winter. Besides the usual seasonal illnesses, rehearsals have been disrupted by several snow days and additional occa-sions when afterschool activities were cancelled due to bad weather.
“None of that is going to stop us from putting on the best high school musical you ever saw,” said di-rector Norma Caizza. “It's already so professional; you won't believe these are student performers.”

Web Special: DEM sends out reminders about cesspool laws

NORTH KINGSTOWN – The Department of Environmental Management (DEM) has begun notifying home-owners in several coastal communities with cesspools that new waste disposal requirements are now in affect. Under the Rhode Island Cesspool Act of 2007, certain cesspools must be abandoned and the homes to which to be-long must be upgraded with a new onsite wastewater treatment system or be connected to available municipal sewer lines.

Spring break is a time students around the country look forward to but, for one small group of youngsters from St. Paul's Episcopal Church in North Kingstown, this year, Spring Break meant more than time off school and hanging out with friends.
For 19 young churchgoers, this year's Spring Break meant a chance to do some good for others as St. Paul's put on a trip to New Orleans to show their members the devastation left by Hurricane Katrina first-hand.
