Proposal dropped by Weiss

NORTH KINGSTOWN –Residents turned out in groves to Monday’s Town Council meeting where a decision on what to do with the old Beechwood House was finally made. after more than four hours of discussions, presentations, questions and answers, and public input.
The council voted unanimously to go with Andrew McClatchy’s proposal of moving the original house to his property at 70 Cold Spring Lane, but not after applicant Stanley Weiss withdrew his proposal.

WEST GREENWICH—For years, fans, parents and athletes in Exeter-West Greenwich High School have debated whether or not there’s enough interest in the town to put together a hockey program.
Thursday night, they got their answer.

Today, let us give thanks for Roberta Humble, Rhode Island’s relentless cheerleader and unofficial goodwill ambassador.
The longtime CCRI English professor and former president of the North Kingstown Rotary Club, has created another trivia game that has the dual objective of providing fun and informing people about state landmarks.
When last we checked in with Roberta, a year ago, she was launching Rhode Test, her first game which sold 3,000 copies. “Rhode Test had families conversing, reminiscing and learning,” she says.
Its sequel, Rhode Side, is already selling like hotcakes.

Local Peace Corps volunteer involved in attack in Africa

EXETER – On Aug. 9, Exeter resident Jesse Coker left to begin a two year volunteer mission with the Peace Corps in Uganda, Africa but, only days after beginning his two-year stint, things took a turn for the worse when Coker found himself and others in a remote location with men with machine guns and machetes.
The incident happened just a day after Coker and 45 other Peace Corps trainees were officially sworn in to become volunteers. Coker, along with four other volunteers, had to travel six hours from the capital, Kampala, to the site where he was going to be staying.

Patterson denies any wrong-doing

EXETER—As an incoming Town Councilman for the Town of Exeter, the last thing Dan Patterson wants to do is ruffle any feathers or stir trouble in his community … at least before he’s officially sworn in anyway.
Unfortunately, that’s no longer an option.

Council approves iPad purchase

NORTH KINGSTOWN – In an effort to save money on printing paper, the town council unanimously approved the purchase of six Apple iPads and two spares for a cost of $8,000 to be paid for out of the Town Council Contingency Fund.
Five of the iPads will be for the five members of the council and one for the town clerk and will not be allowed for personal use. It’s expected that the iPads will save approximately $18,000 annually in printing, paper, consumables and staff costs for the thick stack of paper information packets that are sent to council members every meeting.

Community mourns passing of Briggs

NORTH KINGSTOWN – The founder of Allie’s Donuts and Allie’s Tack and Feed Shop on Quaker Lane, North Kingstown, Frederick Alvin “Allie” Briggs, Jr., 82, passed away Nov. 12 in Florida. He’s being remembered as a hard working businessman who lived for his community and family and who taught his seven children the value of a hard days’ work.
Briggs retired from the donut and tack business in 1986 and moved to Polk City, Fla., with his wife Lucile.

NORTH KINGSTOWN—They’re the talk of everyone from radio shock jocks to state congressmen, a hit on college campuses from coast to coast and the target of an United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) investigation, but if you want to find a can of the popular Four Loko caffeinated alcohol drink around the North Kingstown area, you’ve got to go searching high and low, through brand after brand, as they sit inconspicuously buried on a shelf inside of a refrigerated case at Kingstown Liquor Mart.

NK buses may soon feature cameras

NORTH KINGSTOWN – According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association: Fatality Analysis Reporting System, school buses are the safest motor vehicles on the road and are estimated to be 70 percent safer than passenger cars, light trucks and vans.
But the most dangerous part is getting on and off the bus and, with that in mind, the North Kingstown School Committee is considering adopting a new camera monitoring system that could make the town’s school busses that much safer.
