Coming this Thursday: The SRIN All-Area Fall Sports section!

It's Christmas week and that means two things.
One, you're running out of time to go pick up that special gift for your significant other.
Two, it's time for SRIN to name its annual Fall All-Area Sports teams.
Every winter, the sports staff at Southern Rhode Island Newspapers sits down and pours over endless stories, stats and testimonials and debates who, exactly, had the best season in each sport from throughout our coverage area.
It's no surprise, of course, that Exeter's Al Georgio made the list. He racked up nearly 3,000 yards.

The Rocky Hill School Board of Trustees approved and appointed Mr. Jonathan M. Schoenwald as the eighth Head of School, effective July 1, 2011. The Board's decision followed the unanimous recommendation of the Search Committee. Mr. Schoenwald will succeed alumnus Mr. James J. Young III '70, who announced his departure last spring after serving 16 years as Headmaster.
Jonathan comes to Rocky Hill School from Hunter College in New York City where he has been the Director of the Macaulay Honors College since 2005.

Panera Bread recently presented a check to the South County Hospital Breast Health Program.
The proceeds of $1013.00 were the result of Panera Bread's annual Pink Bagel and Cater Pink campaign. South County Hospital Breast Health Coordinator Marie McCormick and Breast Health Nurse Marilyn Favali accepted the check for the hospital.
The funds will be used to purchase resources for the South County Hospital Cancer Resource Library.

Children's Friend promotes the well-being and healthy development of children by providing wrap-around services to support and strengthen their families and our communities. They have been a resource for Rhode Island's most vulnerable children and their families for more than 175 years.

Ben Thomas aims to show the timeless beauty of Rhode Island

If you enter the tiny Ben Thomas Gallery at the end of the deck at 88 Brown St., you’ll find yourself surrounded by images of familiar and beloved spots in the Ocean State.
A Jamestown native, Thomas is a photographer who possesses a boundless fascination with lighthouses at sunset, dories tied up at the dock, seagulls in a row, bridges emerging from fog and quirky views of sails. His topics include historic spots, too, such as the Gilbert Stuart birthplace.
He likes to experiment with reflected light so many of his pieces have a mirrored effect.

South County chicken lady inspired others

Whenever the Christmas season rolls around and I’m in the presence of pine trees – as I was last week, trekking through the tree farms of Exeter for a story elsewhere in this newspaper – I am reminded of my dear old friend Antoinetta Goodwin and her discovery that Christmas trees are an anti-depressant.
She was a true South County character, renowned for her patriotism and dedication to the state bird, the Rhode Island Red chicken. A tiny woman, she made seasonal costumes for them and had a huge pair bolted to the roof rack of her station wagon, each waving an American flag.
