Annual Festival of Lights celebration kicks off tonight

NORTH KINGSTOWN – When you think of Christmas what comes to mind?
Well, there’s the obvious: shopping, decorating, family.
And, of course, there’s The Festival of Lights in Wickford.
This weekend marks the 25th anniversary of the Festival of Lights, a yearly event put on by local business merchants that brings life to the village with carolers, music and festivities.
This year, the sidewalks will be adorned with luminaria and plenty of Olde English Carolers will be filling the village with music.

Hundreds gather to remember Hosch

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Most came because they loved him. Others showed up because they knew him. Some knew friends of friends. Many didn’t know him at all.
But from Exeter to Newport, from Middletown to East Greenwich, Coventry to South Kingstown, more than 350 people came to the Atlantic Beach Club on Saturday night to show love and generosity to the family and memory of John J. Hosch. How many thousands did they raise for his two daughters’ college education?
They are probably still counting at this writing.

Preventing abuse a big topic at NK School meeting

NORTH KINGSTOWN –According to the Health and Wellness Survey the North Kingstown High School conducted in 2008, 92 percent of students who could drive reported having consumed alcohol in the past 30 days.
One year later, that number has dropped to 20 percent.
At last week’s NK School Committee meeting, Working Together for Wellness (WTW) discussed how the community and school can help prevent substance abuse within the school district.

EWG finalizes co-op program

WEST GREENWICH - The Exeter West Greenwich School Committee voted to approve the Hockey Co-Op team last Tuesday night, joining EWG High School and West Warwick High School as a team.
With the West Warwick school committee also approving the team, the EWG committee voted to approve with Member Robert Bollengier dissenting. Bollengier pointed out that the approved language from the West Warwick school committee doesn’t definitively state that the EWG school district will have no financial responsibility for the co-op team.

Local businesses ready for the holiday season

NORTH KINGSTOWN – The 2010 Christmas shopping season is now in full swing and what better place to buy gifts is right here in your backyard?
That’s the question many local businesses are asking as many of the shops in Wickford, and throughout Rhode Island, have begun their holiday season with open houses and major sales.
Donna Trottier owner of The Blue Hydrangea, located at 2 Main St., markets her merchandise as “cute and reasonable”.
Customers can spend $20 and walk away with a bag-full of items, including hostess gifts, unique napkins, jewelry, books and much more.

John Allen Arnold Weaver, who grew up in Wickford, proudly traces his ancestors to such distant realms as the Knights Templar and the Normans of England. Locally, he goes “right back to Plimouth Plantions” and on to Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold.

EXETER – It appears in the middle of a dark night, on a road in the far western reaches of Exeter, a shining beacon like any lighthouse showing the way home.
The fact that it is illuminated like Fenway Park and has, out front, a Las Vegas-like chasing-light arrow – blinding around a marquee to showcase the daily special – doesn’t hurt, either.

NORTH KINGSTOWN – “If at first you don’t succeed, try try again.” is an old adage that North Kingstown resident Greg Coppa really took to heart.
After years of trying, and trying again, Coppa’s dream of seeing a short story he wrote in 1990 turned into a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie presentation will come true this weekend as “November Christmas”, a movie based on his work, is scheduled to air this Sunday at 9 p.m. on CBS.
