WEB EXCLUSIVE: Panera Bread giving back locally

Panera Bread recently presented a check to the South County Hospital Breast Health Program.
The proceeds of $1013.00 were the result of Panera Bread's annual Pink Bagel and Cater Pink campaign. South County Hospital Breast Health Coordinator Marie McCormick and Breast Health Nurse Marilyn Favali accepted the check for the hospital.
The funds will be used to purchase resources for the South County Hospital Cancer Resource Library.

Children's Friend promotes the well-being and healthy development of children by providing wrap-around services to support and strengthen their families and our communities. They have been a resource for Rhode Island's most vulnerable children and their families for more than 175 years.

If you enter the tiny Ben Thomas Gallery at the end of the deck at 88 Brown St., you’ll find yourself surrounded by images of familiar and beloved spots in the Ocean State.
A Jamestown native, Thomas is a photographer who possesses a boundless fascination with lighthouses at sunset, dories tied up at the dock, seagulls in a row, bridges emerging from fog and quirky views of sails. His topics include historic spots, too, such as the Gilbert Stuart birthplace.
He likes to experiment with reflected light so many of his pieces have a mirrored effect.

South County chicken lady inspired others

Whenever the Christmas season rolls around and I’m in the presence of pine trees – as I was last week, trekking through the tree farms of Exeter for a story elsewhere in this newspaper – I am reminded of my dear old friend Antoinetta Goodwin and her discovery that Christmas trees are an anti-depressant.
She was a true South County character, renowned for her patriotism and dedication to the state bird, the Rhode Island Red chicken. A tiny woman, she made seasonal costumes for them and had a huge pair bolted to the roof rack of her station wagon, each waving an American flag.

EXETER – The Clark and Case families, who were searching together for the perfect Christmas tree, found it in only 10 minutes – a record – and it was a beauty.
Perfectly formed into a point that was just the right height, it was full, round and cone-shaped without a single bare spot. Just what the doctor – or Santa – ordered.
Tim Case earned credit for spotting the balsam fir and his friend, Shane Clark, gave it final approval because, he said, “I’m very picky.”

When one summons a sensory image of what Christmas is supposed to look, smell and sound like, Forward Operating Base (FOB) Naray in Kunar Province may be among the last to come to mind.
Hard by the Pakistan border, it is muscled with angular mountains that seem to rise straight up out of the earth as if some malevolent force was trying to punch through the ground.
