The following is a list of local people who have recently achieved noteworthy accomplishments.

HONOR ROLL

Hailey Novis and Austen C. Novis, both of Jamestown, were named to the honor roll at Phillips Academy in Massachusetts.

Deneen A. Cooke, of North Kingstown, was named to the North Kingstown High School honor roll.

DEAN’S LIST

Erica A. Sweeney, of Exeter and Briana L. Paganetti, of North Kingstown, were named to the Dean’s President’s List for the fall 2010 term at Coastal Carolina University.

POLITICS AS USUAL: Talk Radio-where political opponents turn into enemies

I have always been a First Amendment purist, especially when it comes to freedom of speech and (obviously) freedom of the press.
But I don’t think that calls for civility in our political rhetoric violate, or even restrict, the First Amendment.
Calls to ban or, even worse, punish harsh or uncivil political discussion would cross that line. But a voluntary admonition to tone it down and not be vicious or hateful is definitely inbounds.
Not all that long ago, politics was fun. It was fun for those who participated in it and it was fun for those, like journalists, who watched it.

Commissioner Gist coming to NK Tomorrow Night

NORTH KINGSTOWN – Rhode Island Education Commissioner Deborah Gist will be holding a community forum in North Kingstown tomorrow night as part of her Commissioner’s 2010-2011 Listening and Learning Tour.
As part of her tour, Gist will visit every school district and hold a community forum where she’ll discuss the strategic plan that’s transforming education in the state and take questions from the public.
