Local teenager eyes future in NASCAR

NORTH KINGSTOWN—For most people, finding the career that’s right for them is a task that takes a lifetime. For North Kingstown teenager Brandon Martinez, all it took was one afternoon at an automotive swap meet in Thompson, Connecticut.
He was seven years old.

This week, Westerly Community Credit Union distributed checks from the 27th Annual WCCU Holiday Basketball Tournament to the four participating high schools: Chariho, Exeter-West Greenwich, Stonington and Westerly.
The tournament was held on Dec 27, 28, 29 and 30, and raised money for four participating schools’ sports boosters.
‘WCCU has always been a very community-oriented institution,’ stated Steve White, WCCU President & CEO. ‘We couldn’t be happier being the sole sponsor of this event for the past 27 years and raising money to help our communities’ young adults.’

I ask you, what could be scarier than the RI General Assembly mucking up a perfectly good tradition like Halloween?
But South Kingstown Rep. Donald Lally, a deputy whip on Speaker Gordon Fox’s leadership team, has an idea; he wants to fine-tune Halloween. Halloween has been around in one form or another since the mid-1500s, it is celebrated in many parts of the world, but Lally suddenly wants the General Assembly to fix it.

Police make major drug bust in NK

After a long investigation stemming back to September of 2010, Rhode Island State police on Wednesday announced a major drug bust after obtaining search warrants at 376 Dry Bridge Road, Unit#A-3, in North Kingstown.
Thirty one kilograms of cocaine were seized in a hidden compartment in the Chrysler Pacifica located on the premises and $1,245,100 was seized from a hidden compartment in a tractor trailer truck.

Girl Scouts from East Greenwich Troop 1380 and North Kingstown Troop 111 recently held a “dress down day” at Our Lady of Mercy School, East Greenwich, to benefit Project Undercover. Over 9,000 pieces of socks, underwear and diapers were collected and donated to the West Bay Community Action program in Warwick.

I don’t know
I say that a lot these days and I really don’t know, either because I’ve forgotten or I never knew in the first place. I do know that the longer I am around on this earth, the less I know for a fact. And that is good, I think, because it keeps the mind open to all sorts of new possibilities. If I decided that I knew, then what’s the point? I’m done, finished, subject is closed. It’s more fun not to know and hope for advanced knowledge of some sort. Something like that.
