CRANSTON, R.I. - Clink, clank, clunk! That's the sound more than 15,000 students throughout Rhode Island will soon hear as they pour their pocket change into collection jars to support Olive Garden's 17th-annual Pasta for Pennies program benefiting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) School & Youth campaign. Last year, Olive Garden's Pasta for Pennies collected $6.1 million nationally, bringing the total amount donated since the program's inception to more than $53 million.

NORTH KINGSTOWN – Dr. Mirella “Muriel” Emley Camarra, an outspoken public watchdog and advocate for the common man – instrumental in reviving the North Kingstown Taxpayers Organization in the mid-1990s – died Monday at her home on Narrow Lane.

It was a sad week in North Kingstown this past week as a pair of local icons passed away.
Dr. Mirella "Muriel" Emley Camarra, an outspoken public watchdog and advocate for the common man, died Monday at her home at Narrow Lane and, in a story no other local newspaper in Rhode Island has, this week's Standard Times pays tribute to Muriel as friends and families remember her in great detail.

New program at NKHS offers real world lessons

A new program at North Kingstown High School is offering special education students a way to gain valuable work experience and important life lessons.
The program, which began in October, aims to give students an opportunity to get out of the classroom and into a real working environment with the accompanying responsibilities and prospects focused on that task. Students are required to report to work daily in the high school cafeteria alongside adult employees, often to participate in monthly luncheons for the high school staff.

The proposed two-percent additional tax on restaurant meals and beverages has emerged as the big headline from Gov. Lincoln Chafee’s 2012 budget. His notion that it would fund additional aid to school districts didn’t seem to get as much ink.
My advice? Go someplace nice for lunch, order a good meal and a cocktail, and stop worrying about it. The tax ain’t going to happen.

Construction of new Fire Academy on track

EXETER –Nine years ago, voters approved a $55 million public safety bond that included $6.4 million to build a new Rhode Island State Fire Academy. The site was to be located on the old Ladd School property in Exeter and now, almost a year after the ground breaking ceremony, phase one of the construction is moving on track and the Academy is slated to be completed in the spring.
The project was designed by Providence-based firm Robinson Green Beretta and Under Iron Construction of Warwick, is overseeing the site work.

NORTH KINGSTOWN – When you’re fed up with freezing temperatures, icy roads and blackened snow piled high, it’s nice to think about warm-weather activities as a distraction.
Some people pore over seed catalogs, planning their spring gardens. Barry Gross is enmeshed in plans to refurbish the old Johnson’s Boat Yard site that he’s owned since 1992. He’s already started, dredging three years ago to increase the capacity to 60 slips plus 24 moorings in Mill Cove.
Now, under the new name Northwick Boat Yard, the Narragansett-based realtor and developer is upgrading the facilities again.

School budget for NK passes first hurdle

NORTH KINGSTOWN - According to the North Kingstown Town Ordinance, the NK School Committee had to submit a budget to the Town Council by the end of Tuesday’s School Committee meeting. After lengthy discussions, the committee approved, five to two, a bottom line of $58,805,460. Committee members William Mudge and Joe Thompson cast the dissenting votes.

NECAP scores show great improvement in Exeter

WEST GREENWICH—As Exeter-West Greenwich High School Principal Brian Butler walked through the halls of his school last fall during the week of testing for the New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP), he noticed something was a little bit different.
His students, who had one year earlier struggled to reach proficiency levels in reading, math and writing, were taking right up to the final minute to finish the tests and, from that observation alone, Butler could tell they were taking it more seriously than they had in prior years.
