Ah, spring. Nice weather, the smell of fresh cut flowers and ... snow?
While it's certainly true that we've yet to break free from the cold temperatures of a stubborn winter, things are sure heating up in NK and Exeter this week.
For one thing, the NK Town Council recently accepted a preliminary budget, one which makes some controversial cuts.
And Exeter? Well, when the EWG School Committee isn't busy debating the merits of a new school-year calendar, it's preparing for next month's all-day referendum.

NORTH KINGSTOWN –At the end of the March 15 meeting of the North Kingstown Planning Commission, it was determined that the public hearing on the Oately’s Restaurant/Rolling Greens development would be continued until tonight at 7 p.m. at Beechwood Center.
The applicants are Mark Hawkins of M.L. Hawk Realty, LLC, owner of Rolling Greens Golf Course and Oatley’s owner, Vaughn Oatley, an abutter to the golf course on the proposed devel-opment.

NORTH KINGSTOWN – At Monday’s North Kingstown Town Council meeting, members unanimously approved the purchase of a new rescue vehicle for the NK Fire Department.

Rhode Island Resource Recovery to host special Eco-Depot

JOHNSTON, R.I. - The Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation (RIRRC) will host a special Eco-Depot collection of household hazardous waste (HHW) in Glocester on March 26 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The site is the Glocester Highway Department located at 91 Chestnut Hill Road. The collection is free and available for Rhode Island residents only.
Appointments are necessary for the Eco-Depot service to reduce waiting time in the drop-off.

NORTH KINGSTOWN – There have always been amazing women living among us in the community, quietly working in ways that earned praise. In honor of Women’s History Month, I’ll spend the next few columns writing about them.
Some are women I knew through long-ago interviews; others are connected in more obscure ways. They are all gone now. I hope remembering them will bring smiles to the faces of readers who haven’t seen these memorable names in awhile.
This week we’ll celebrate two women who were ahead of their time in running businesses that filled needs nobody else seemed to recognize.

Local senators back E-Verify

EXETER – When Governor Lincoln Chafee rescinded the E-Verify program established by his predecessor, Don Carcieri, as one of his first official acts in office back in January, it was a controversial move that several senators throughout the state objected to.
Now, local Senators Francis T. Maher, Jr., (Dist. 34, Charlestown, Hopkinton, Exeter, Richmond and West Greenwich) and Sen. James Sheehan (Dist. 36, North Kingstown and Narragansett) have decided to do something about it.

Fire chief has deep NK roots

NORTH KINGSTOWN – North Kingstown has a new Fire Department Chief. His name? Chief Fenwick Gardiner.
Gardiner, 52, became the department's 11th chief after his swearing-in ceremony Monday at the North Kingstown Town Council meeting. He replaces former Chief Patrick Campion who retired in December.
“We’re pleased and honored to accept this position tonight that Fenwick will be staying on with us and not retiring to somewhere sunny,” Council President Liz Dolan said. “We’re grateful that’s he’s willing to take the lead of this fine fire department.”

North Kingstown gets ready to show off its spirit

NORTH KINGSTOWN—Do you take pride in your town? Are you looking to show off your spirit? You’re not alone.
The 11th annual Spirit Day will be celebrated at North Kingstown High School this Saturday, Mar. 19 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
“This is about good feelings, good friends and community interest,” said Spirit Day committee member Harriet Powell. According to Powell, the committee has been planning this day since November.

It was a big week for local news stories in North Kingstown this week as a 26-year old man from Glocester was killed in an industrial accident in West Davisville, NK itself got a new fire chief and two local senators put their name on a controversial bill to reintroduce the much discussed E-Verify program back into Rhode Island.

EWG SC approves school budget

WEST GREENWICH—The Exeter West Greenwich School Committee approved the adoption of the final budget for 2011-12 school year on Tuesday night, at a total operational cost of $30, 828, 944.
The school committee unanimously approved the final 2011-12 school year budget, with the cost to Exeter at $10,365,920 and the cost to West Greenwich at $12,411,315.
