WEB EXCLUSIVE: Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island to Hold Free Sun Safety Screening

With warmer weather on its way, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) will sponsor a free sun safety screening on April 7 from 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. at the Rhode Island Free Clinic, 655 Broad Street, Providence. All members of the public are encouraged to attend.

Remarkable Women: Indian princess, author spun compelling stories of history

The final pair of memorable women in our Women’s History Month series were, appropriately enough, historians.
I was fortunate enough to known both of them.
The first was Princess Red Wing, a wonderfully colorful character, who helped preserve Native American history and culture by speaking to schoolchildren as well as dignitaries throughout the world.
Although her bloodlines included the Wampanoag and the Mashantucket Pequots, she identified primarily with the Ninigret Narragansetts and gave generations of their children Indian names.

Celebrations of Faith: Songs tell Mary Magdalene’s story

NORTH KINGSTOWN – When the Rev. Betty-Rae Hopkins, portraying Mary Magdalene, sang of God growing the tree that “He knew would be used to build the old rugged cross,” you could have heard a pin drop.
Her beautiful soprano voice – full of emotion – soared and whispered, captivating a packed fellowship hall in the First Baptist Church of North Kingstown last Wednesday, at the most recent of the town-wide ecumenical Lenten luncheons.
“It was magnificent,” declared Shirley Burnham, a church member, when the program had ended.

NORTH KINGSTOWN – Students at the Suzanne M. Henseler Quidnessett Elementary School have been treated all week to special guest readers as part of Reading Week.
The week began with Gov. Lincoln Chafee reading to the kindergarten students and Attorney General Peter Kil-martin reading to the fifth graders. The Governor read Ducks Don’t Wear Socks, by John Nedwidek.

NKPD offering Alzheimer’s registration program

NORTH KINGSTOWN – Did you know that the sixth leading cause of death in America is Alzheimer’s Disease? And, it’s the only disease in the top 10 that can’t be predicted, cured or even slowed.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association of America, 5.4 million American’s are living with this disease and, since 2000, deaths from other major diseases have dropped, while deaths from Alzheimer’s have risen 66 percent. More shocking is that every 69 seconds, someone in the United States develops Alzheimer’s.

NORTH KINGSTOWN –Early Saturday morning, members of the North Kingstown Facilities Man-agement and Planning Subcommittee along with members of the public, Town Council and School Committee, toured the former Wickford Elementary School building, 99 Phillips St., to get a better un-derstanding of the proposed renovations as detailed in the recent Rowse Report.

Remarkable Women: Legacy of public service remembered

As we continue our Women’s History Month celebration of extraordinary women who left indelible marks on our local history, we focus today on a trio of women who defined public service.
I was fortunate enough to know the first, Cora Lamoureux, longtime town clerk of West Greenwich, and wish I had known the others. Ruth Arnold and Susan Carpenter, the first two librarians of the Willett Free Library, in Saunderstown, logged a combined 90 years at the circulation desk. Astonishing.
