School Committee adopts 2011-2012 calendar

WEST GREENWICH–The Exeter-West Greenwich school committee voted Tuesday night to approve a traditional calendar for the 2011-12 school year, including both a February and an April vacation and a start date before Labor Day.
There were two versions of the school year calendar that were not approved. One calendar had the school year starting after Labor Day with one vacation week in March; the other had the school year starting before Labor Day with one vacation week in March.

The Exeter-West Greenwich School District will be holding an all-day referendum on the 2011/2012 school operations budget and charter amendments, Monday, April 11 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Exeter residents can vote at the Exeter Public Library, 773 Ten Rod Road; Exeter and West Greenwich residents can vote at the West Greenwich Fire Station #1, 830 Nooseneck Hill Road, West Greenwich.

NORTH KINGSTOWN – The Rev. W. David Dobbins Jr., interim rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, confessed that the planning group for last week’s Lenten luncheon seriously underestimated the number of participants.
“We heard about attendance at the other lunches and talked about setting up for 80 but we thought that must be an exaggeration. So we prepared for 60.”

NORTH KINGSTOWN – Architect Andy Pearce was ready to accept a job with Keough Construction, but before he did, he told his new employer he couldn’t start until after Feb. 12.
What?
It’s more a question of why. Pearce had committed to being part of a mission team from First Baptist Church in Wickford that was planning a trip to the Dominican Republic from Feb. 5-12.
Not only did his new boss agree to the stipulation, he donated money to the effort.

Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation (RIRRC) will host a special collection of household hazardous waste (HHW) and electronic waste at Second Beach in Middletown on April 16 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. For people who live on Aquidneck Island, this will be a convenient date to avoid the trip to Johnston for special wastes disposal.
Eco-Depot collections are free and are available to Rhode Island residents only. To avoid waiting in lines, appointments are necessary if dropping off HHW. No appointment is required for recycling electronic waste.

Remarkable Women: Indian princess, author spun compelling stories of history

The final pair of memorable women in our Women’s History Month series were, appropriately enough, historians.
I was fortunate enough to known both of them.
The first was Princess Red Wing, a wonderfully colorful character, who helped preserve Native American history and culture by speaking to schoolchildren as well as dignitaries throughout the world.
Although her bloodlines included the Wampanoag and the Mashantucket Pequots, she identified primarily with the Ninigret Narragansetts and gave generations of their children Indian names.
