Local URI student seeks to change the world

A local college student is out to change the world and judging by his collegiate accomplishments thus far, he’s off to a great start.
Scott Andrews, 21 years old and a junior at University of Rhode Island, believes an individual can combine political ideals and take action to transform their communities at the same time.
It’s because of this belief that Andrews was recently chosen by the Campus Compact as one of 135 men-of-action for its first group of Newman Civic Fellows who come from 30 states.

JAMESTOWN – In his Navy service, former Wickford Middle School Principal Martin Hellewell (a 1954 graduate of WMS)—who retired as a captain—logged 30 years, 10 on active duty and 20 in the Reserves.
At 74, he says he was involved in Cold War activities “big time”, starting after his 1960 graduation from Officers Candidate School. “I went as an engineer officer on a patrol craft escort based out of Chicago.

EXETER – Even now, 44 years after he patrolled the jungles of Vietnam – a place that steamed in the daytime, becoming, cold and wet at night – Ken Fernstrom remembers the daily quest to survive.
“I think about it on a daily basis,” he says. “Everything is still crystal clear.”
Fernstrom, who served 18 years on the Town Council (he thinks that's a record for length of tenure on Exeter's governing body), was 18 in 1967 when he enlisted in the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Infantry.

NORTH KINGSTOWN – Ted Johnson, 78, spent exactly three years, three months and three days in the Navy on a heavy cruiser out of Norfolk, Va. The USS Newport News CA-148 was the flagship of the 6th Fleet.
“We went to ports that some others didn’t go to,” Johnson recalls. One of his most prominent early duties was to formally welcome dignitaries visting the Admiral.

NORTH KINGSTOWN – Warren Becker, who will turn 85 in a few weeks, is quick to point out there’s no such thing as an ex-Marine. Once a Marine, always a Marine is the byword of this proud military branch.
In World War II, he explains, “I was a seagoing Marine, attached to Navy cruisers. I went to South America and around Cape Horn into the Pacific but not the actual war zone.”

Military and music in perfect harmony for retired Navy officer

NORTH KINGSTOWN – Debbie Goodwin followed her father in some major aspects of life: she took up an instrument and, as a teen, joined her dad in the Lafayette Band; she chose the same career path, too, logging 22 years in the U.S. Navy; and like, her dad, she met her spouse in the service, too.
It is a military family with a musical flourish.
Her dad, the late Robert Rice, retired as a Navy Lieutenant Commander; her mom, Nettie, was in the Navy Nurses Corps for eight years during World War II. Debbie’s husband, Tom, retired after a combined 29-and-a-half years in the Navy and Marine Corps.
