CURMUDGEON'S CORNER: It's been a rough month for law enforcement officials (OPINION)

September 26, 2012

The last few weeks have not been particularly good ones for law enforcement officers.
A judge found the City of West Warwick guilty of negligence in the death of a man who suffered from schizophrenia. Police responded to a report that a sign at a place of business was being vandalized. They found a six-foot-four, 245-pound man at the scene who refused to follow their instructions saying, “You’re not the boss of me.” After being subdued and placed in the back of a patrol car, this giant suffered some kind of seizure and died despite efforts to revive him.

EXETER – After breaking ground in 2008 for its long-planned National Guard monument and dedicating the engraved concrete elements the following year, members of the sponsoring group faced a solemn reality: They couldn’t afford the majestic statue needed to complete the presentation.
In fact, during that earlier dedication, an actual man climbed up and stood atop the massive base, filling in for the missing figure.
Enter North Kingstown’s Lt. Col. (ret) Bob Urquhart, who was urged to take the reins and see the project through to completion.

September 21, 2012

By PAUL J. SPETRINI

PROVIDENCE—Sharon Gamba paced around the State Board of Elections office Monday afternoon with pen and paper in hand and a look of determination on her face.
Staring at the five electronic ballot machines in a dimly-lit basement area where all recounts are completed, Gamba watched as vote after vote was reentered. Her hope was, simply, that at least 19 of the 1,168 ballots turned the District 32 Republican primary race against incumbent Larry Ehrhardt back in her favor.

It seems like it just happened yesterday but this week we passed the 11-year anniversary of one of the most significant events of our lifetime. Each of us remembers what we were doing, where we were and how we felt on September 11, 2001.
Tragedy has a way of bringing people together. We are able to gain the strength to challenge each other to go forward and doing nothing is never an option.
Each month of the year can bring out own personal memories. Some are joyous, some are filled with heartache.

EXETER – The words “cutting edge” and “Exeter” aren’t necessarily what you’d expect to find in the same sentence.
But in this large and heavily rural part of the state – sometimes considered pokey and Mayberry-ish by more cosmopolitan types – a combination of grant-funded initiatives and cross-departmental alliances are putting Exeter at the forefront of technology and environmentally-aware green projects.
In the process, the advances are saving the town and its taxpayers a ton of green as well.

By MARTHA SMITH
Special to the Standard

EXETER – When a major weather event is on the way, residents receive constant advisories via computer, TV and radio, but what about the animals housed at the town’s shelter on South County Trail?
Who’s looking out for their safety?
As it happens, in another example of inter-departmental teamwork, Stefan Coutoulakis and Steve Mattscheck – directors, respectively, of emergency management and public works/the shelter – have put their heads together over this very topic. They have arrived at a plan adapted from one used in coastal Louisiana.
