Wakefield Baptist Church to feature nativities from around the world

    WAKEFIELD – From Kenya to Haiti to Nepal, the Wakefield Baptist Church will feature more than 275 nativities from around the world to remind people what Christmas is about during its Festival of the Nativity on Dec. 11 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the church at 236 Main St. in Wakefield.
    “It's to remember what Christmas is about. It's a good way to get into the Christmas spirit,” Nancy Bancroft, congregation member and coordinator of the festival said.

Climate change spurring early birth of comb jellies in Narragansett Bay

    NARRAGANSETT—They do not pulse or sting, but they do glow. From Narragansett Bay to Argentina comb jellies shimmer with refracted light from their ever-moving bodies. And they can be spotted through the dark night waters as a result of bioluminescence. Comb jellies are a type of ctenophore (ten-o-for) and natural to Rhode Island’s waters. They are not dangerous to humans but their early reproduction cycles, which new studies show are a result of climate change, could affect the microscopic and fish life of Narragansett Bay. The jellies early births have encouraged researchers to learn more about this invertebrate’s life cycle in Rhode Island's waters.

Sesame Street taking cues from South County schools

    NARRAGANSETT – PBS's “Sesame Street” and “The Electric Company” are taking lessons from southern Rhode Island school districts to help increase its focus for the next two years on science and inquiry.
    Sara Sweetman, director of education for the University of Rhode Island’s Guiding Education in Math and Science Network (GEMS-NET), has been working behind the scenes with Sesame Workshop since February, first in a series of seminars in New York and then continuing with regular conversations with the group that produces “Sesame Street” and “The Electric Company.”

BayScape Nursery opens just in time for the holidays

    NARRAGANSETT- Just in time for the holiday season, BayScape Nursery has opened its new retail location at 933 Boston Neck Road.
    Owners Barry Mills and Ed Fishell, both natives of Narragansett who were raised just down the road in Mettatuxet, opened the doors to the public last Friday. Construction on the new building, adjacent greenhouse and surrounding property took just over nine months to complete. Bayscape was originally located about a mile north behind the Saunderstown post office.
    "It's a more convenient location for everyone," said Fishell during a recent interview. "We are much more visible now and more people will see what we have to offer here. Plus it means a lot to Barry and I that we grew up so close to the place.

SK’s Whaley wants communication, unity

SOUTH KINGSTOWN–As the new president of South Kingstown Town Council, Ella Whaley plans to reach out to community members and bridge the divide amongst town organizations.
Whaley has been an elected official in South Kingstown for 12 years, first working on the school committee for eight years and then working on the town council. After being elected for her third term to the council this year, the council elected her as president at the swearing-in ceremony Monday, Nov. 22.

SK Library adds LEGO’s, DUPLOS to youth program

SOUTH KINGSTOWN - The South Kingstown Public Libraries are collecting LEGOs and DUPLOS for youth library programs.
"It's a growing popular program. It's successful in bringing in kids who otherwise wouldn't come to the other library programs especially boys that are school age," Tina Ladika of the Peace Dale Library said.
Ladika said with the donations, the South Kingstown Public Libraries would like to create a LEGO club. She said that it seems children are interested in the club.

Boon Street Diner open for business

NARRAGANSETT–Courtney Quinlan, 24, and Rebecca Babcock, 25, now help run a restaurant. Six months ago if you had asked them what their futures held, slinging hash and beating together omelets would not have been a prospect.
"This restaurant just fell into place and...well, into our laps," Rebecca said. Her father, Scott Babcock, also was not expecting to be a restaurateur. For 30 years he has been a fisherman at Galilee, 18 of those years as owner and operater of the Rebecca May (whose picture proudly hangs on the back wall.) Since the opening on Nov. 8, all hands have been on deck for The Boon Street Diner.

I am personally blessed to be a member of a “multi-cultural family” and we celebrate our differences. The best way for me to describe this special relationship is to educate what I am celebrating.
Chanukkah begins Wednesday, December 1 at sun down and is observed for eight days. It is a Jewish holiday best known as the ‘festival of lights’, referring to the flames on the candles. It is not the Jewish Christmas; in fact it is not a very important religious holiday, but a celebration of a victory. A profound faith and loyalty to God which helped the Jewish people win over the forces of darkness.

Wakefield Concert Band gives gift of music

WAKEFIELD–The Wakefield Concert Band is giving the gift of music to the South County community as it holds its second annual free holiday concert on Monday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. at the South Kingstown High School.
The holiday concert will feature mostly holiday music accompanied by a classical old band pieces that fit the season.
“We’ll play mostly in the holiday spirit. The classical old band pieces fit the season. They’re a wonderful sound to blend into the holiday. Eight of 11 pieces are the standard holiday music,” Barry Lieberman, the band director said.

DOT opens three bridges in South County, traffic flow improves

NARRAGANSETT - Traffic along Route 108 will flow more smoothly with the opening of three bridges in South County earlier this week.
Two of the bridges carried traffic from Route 1 over Route 108 at the Narragansett exit. One takes vehicles northbound and the other takes vehicles southbound. They had been shut down since the fall of 2009. The state Department of Transportation had opened the northbound bridge in the summer, but the southbound remained closed for repairs until Sunday night, Nov. 21. During repairs, north and southbound traffic had to share first the northbound portion and then the southbound portion.
