Proliferation of spat is good news for state

NARRAGANSETT–The Harbor Management committee met to discuss an impending public meeting with CRMC on March 14 regarding aquaculture permits in Pt. Judith Pond.

But the main agenda item was to listen to a presentation from Save The Bay regarding a scallop restoration program in Pt. Judith Pond the non-profit has worked on since 2007.

SKHS to eliminate level B classes

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The South Kingstown High School will soon eliminate its lower level – B classes to help students achieve a higher standard and receive better scores on the state NECAPs.

SK cops arrest two juveniles for break-ins in Wakefield

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Two juveniles were arrested Monday for break-in and entering on two separate incidents.
At 1:32 p.m., police arrested a 14-year old male for breaking into a home on Kenyon Ave.
“Someone called in the suspicious activity and we were able to locate the individual in the area,” Capt. Jeffrey Allen of the South Kingstown police said.

RIDOT closing section of Rt. 1 North in South Kingstown for pavement repair

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) is closing a short segment of Route 1 North in South Kingstown tomorrow, Wednesday, March 2, 2011. The closure is expected to last from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to allow for repair of damaged pavement.

SK School Committee workshop focuses on developing strong leadership

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The School Committee held a work shop session Tuesday night, where they focused on how to improve their leadership roles and how to best develop a bullying policy for the schools.
In its discussion on how to formulate a bullying policy that is both current and flexible to future changes, the school committee discussed the possibility of actually talking with students on what goes on in their schools.

Non-renewal letters forthcoming in SK

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Due to the global fiscal crisis and unknown revenue streams, 144 teachers will be receiving non-renewal letters in the coming days after the school committee approved Superintendent Kristen Stringfellow's recommendation Tuesday night.

Newport man charged with five felonies for home invasion in SK

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – A Newport man was arrested on a South Kingstown police warrant Wednesday and charged with five felonies related to a home invasion involving a firearm on Feb. 4.

Would repeal of Caruolo Act have ramifications for SK?

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – A state representative has proposed repealing the controversial Caruolo Act, which allows school committees to file suit against their taxpayers when they overspend their budgets, something South Kingstown isn't too worried about.

Rep. Patricia L. Morgan, R- West Warwick, Coventry introduced the legislation to eliminate the law that she said is a costly and lengthy method of resolving funding disputes.
