‘The Tank’ is back: Bess Eaton returns to Wakefield

WAKEFIELD – A town tradition is now back serving up coffee, donuts and bagels with the opening of Bess Eaton last Friday at the corner of Main Street and Kingstown Road.

After Tim Hortons closed this past November, manager Mary Haverly saw it as an opportunity to bring the local Bess Eaton back to Wakefield.
“We knew it was missed. We loved it and we knew it would be successful,” Haverly said. “It was successful in the past and even as I owned Tim Hortons for six years, people kept asking for Bess Eaton coffee.”

Capital Reserves Committee talks future school projects

NARRAGANSETT–The Capital Reserves Committee met on Tuesday evening to outline upcoming renovations at the Narragansett High School. These major projects include a new glass envelope for the school’s greenhouse and a new floor for the high school gymnasium.

“This committee’s purpose is to understand the capital plan as presented to the school department, and make recommendations to the town council in financing all three schools,” said Katherine E. Sipala, Superintendent of Schools in Narragansett.

Police resources much better now for finding kids

SOUTH KINGSTOWN - If Jason Foreman went missing today, the search for the lost boy might have been different.
South Kingstown retired Captain H. Ronald Hawksley, a lead detective in the case that put Michael Woodmansee, who killed five year old Jason Foreman in 1975 behind bars said police have better resources now in searching for missing children and they would not have made the same mishaps.

Narragansett fisherman perishes in house fire

NARRAGANSETT–A Narragansett man died Monday morning after a fire engulfed the inside of his home at 45 Durkin Drive. David W. Jordan, a 57 year-old lobsterman, was said to be trapped inside of his one floor ranch home.
Narragansett Fire Chief Jim Cotter said that a relative called Jordan’s house but received no answer. The relative then went to Jordan’s home and after seeing flames, called 911.

Business owners discuss Narragansett’s economic future

NARRAGANSETT–As Robert Leaver set up the bulletin boards across the assembly room, Narragansett business owners quickly learned that this was not a typical public forum. Leaver, spearhead of the New Commons consultancy firm, conducts public forums as innovative brainstorming sessions. Wednesday evening was an opportunity for local business owners to develop ideas about making Narragansett a more economically profitable town.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – At its work shop session Tuesday night, the school committee focused on how students are assessed, how their needs are met and how it relates to NECAP scores.

Legislation introduced to keep murderers locked up

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin and local legislators Senator Susan Sosnowski and Representative Teresa Tanzi have introduced legislation that would prevent future murderers like Michael Woodmansee from ever being eligible for time off for good behavior.

Sosnowski resolution calls for input from local fishermen

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Due to the efforts of state Senator Susan Sosnowski, fisherman will now be able to offer input into the development of offshore energy projects with the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEMRE).

The state senate recently passed Sosnowski’s, D-South Kingstown, New Shoreham, resolution in which she requested BOEMRE to include official representation of offshore fishermen on the Rhode Island Offshore Renewable Energy Task Force.

Preliminary budget approved by SK Town Council

SOUTH KINGSTOWN–The town council approved the preliminary budget for next year at Monday night’s meeting amidst tension as councilman Jim O’Neill voted against it.

The total municipal budget is $89,774,895. From the municipal programs, the general fund received $73,372,050. The water fund is $963,949. The wastewater fund is $3,201,247. The solid waste fund is $719,603. The Peace Dale office building received $90,289. The neighborhood guild fund is $834,192. The senior services program received $726,208. The school fund received $58,434,545.
