SK School Committee addresses funding formula inequities

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – While the South Kingstown schools stands to lose funding in state aid, the school committee has taken action by approving a resolution that proposes changes in the state education funding formula.

South Kingstown will lose 5 percent in state aid. According to the update on the Governor’s recommended budget on March 9, South Kingstown will receive $8.4 million in 2012, which is 14.18 percent of the budget. South Kingstown is losing $371,606 in funding.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – As school administrators and committees work to devise an adequate bully prevention policy, teachers are taking action inside the schools to help guide students through those troubling hallways.
At Curtis Corner Middle School, 7th grade English language arts teacher Kristen Precious is one teacher who is taking her lesson plan one step further to teach students about bullying through the books she assigns to the topics they write on.

WAKEFIELD–As the Democrats and Republicans in Washington debate over how to decrease the federal deficit, Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) visited local seniors at the South Kingstown Senior Center Monday to discuss the House Republican plan to privatize Medicare.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Many see bullying as just a part of growing up. Yet, kids are not just being stuffed into lockers anymore or given swirlies in a toilet, but are tormented online through social media, which they cannot escape from. With tormented children increasingly committing suicide after months of harassment from their peers, this playground staple seems to be much more than simple growing pains. While many school districts struggle to combat the bullying issue and to develop an adequate bullying policy, the South Kingstown school district is doing all it can to make sure they never lose a student to bullying.

Narragansett woman arrested for elderly exploitation, abuse

NARRAGANSETT– Officers executed a search warrant at 144 South Pier Road Wednesday morning in relation to an arrest warrant for Tracy Anderson, 44, for the abuse and exploitation of an elderly person with severe handicaps. NPD also obtained various documents and a combination safe during their search.

Local runners among top finishers in Boston

NARRAGANSETT - From the starting line in Hopkinton through the infamous Heartbreak Hill and to the finishing line at Copley Square, over 24,000 runners competed in the world’s most famous race, the Boston Marathon. Amongst those leading the pack of runners on Monday were two local legends, Glen Guillemette of Narragansett and Claire Gadrow of Wakefield.

NARRAGANSETT–The weather did indeed cooperate with the students from Roger Williams University on Sunday afternoon. Traveling in two school buses, their goal on this wind swept, yet sunny day was to clean up Narragansett Town Beach.
A group of 50 students gathered at the South Beach Pavilion in Narragansett with trash bags and gloves, ready to help clean the beach as Earth Day approaches on this Friday, April 22.

Fourth suspect in SK home invasion arrested in Middletown

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – A Providence man wanted for the February Kings Ridge Road home invasion was arrested last Wednesday after Middletown police found him.
Jaylon S. Butler, 19 of 171 Reynolds Ave., Apt. 2, Providence was charged with three felonies: assault with a deadly weapon in a house, burglary, and conspiracy.
Butler was one of the four armed men who invaded the home at 44 Kings Ridge Road, the residence of Derek Benoit on Feb. 4 demanding marijuana and money and assaulting Benoit with baseball bats.
