Point Judith selected for federal economic study

NARRAGANSETT–The economic downturn has affected many towns and cities around the nation, yet none as pronouncedly as the fishing communities in the New England area. Point Judith is one of them.
The U.S Economic Development Administration has selected Point Judith, among six other New England fishing ports, for a two and a half-day analysis of the specific issues concerning the community. The EDA examined a number of fishery data from the fishing ports, including the groundfish landing revenues and the percentage of groundfish landed at a port compared to state totals.

Army couple deployed again

NARRAGANSETT – After serving in Iraq from 2008 to 2009, two local Narragansett veterans are being deployed once again this May to Afghanistan, having to leave behind their first baby.
Their deployment to Afghanistan will be the second time both Michael and Marie Johnson go overseas. But this time will be the first time they have to leave their eight month year old daughter behind, who will stay with her maternal grandmother.

Chafee’s proposal to double beach fees doesn’t wash

Surfing the waters in Narragansett, eating clam cakes and clam chowder and spending a summer day at the beach are what many believe make Rhode Island what is it.
Yet, with Gov. Chafee’s proposal to double beach parking fees looming, many Rhode Islanders feel the price increase will only take away from what made this state the Ocean State.

North Beach Clubhouse gets a total makeover

NARRAGANSETT- The North Beach Clubhouse has been the place for residents to have parties for years. Today, the clubhouse facing the ocean is being renovated for the future.
Keith Lescarbeau, the lead contractor and owner of Abcore Restoration, is finishing the complete overhaul of the North Beach Clubhouse. The project has taken only five weeks from planning to the end of construction, a time frame which is not often possible.

Fire at Fournier Estates

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The Fournier Estates, apartment complex on High Street was deemed uninhabitable after a fire broke out Sunday afternoon and displaced four families.

At 1:38 p.m., Sunday, units from the Union Fire District, the Emergency Medical Services and police responded to the fire on 480 High Street, where flames engulfed Apartment A2 and damaged Apartments A1, A3 and A4. The fire was extinguished by 1:55 p.m.. Union Fire District Chief Robert Perry said between 45 to 50 firefighters from all of the fire units, including Peace Dale, Wakefield, Forestry and West Kingston responded with the state fire marshall arriving too.

Owens ready for the challenge of managing Trio Restaurant

NARRAGANSETT – With 31 years of experience in the Rhode Island restaurant industry, Toni Owens is bringing her skills to the Trio Restaurant on Kingstown Road as the new restaurant manager.
Owens comes to the Narragansett restaurant after managing the Dunes Club, a 125-seat restaurant for four years and the Coast Guard House for 16 years.

A look back at the flood of the century

WAKEFIELD–When four feet of water rushed into the back of Damon’s Hardware on Main Street last March, co-owner Toni Chappell said she was horrified.

Since 1945, the plumbing and hardware store has been situated next to the Saugatucket River, where sump pumps have been able to control the overflow of water due to rain floods. However, on March 31 last year, Rhode Island experienced the worst flooding it has seen in a century, causing the Saugatucket River to overflow its bank.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN - Matunuck Beach Road property owners filled the town council chamber Tuesday night for a chance to tell Coastal Resource Management Council to do what they should have done 15 years ago: stop coastal erosion along Matunuck Beach.
The Town Council and local state representatives Sen. Susan Sosnowski, Shoreham and Rep. Donna Walsh and representatives for federal senators Sheldon Whitehouse and Jack Reed met with the CRMC during a work session to discuss solutions to prevent coastal erosion along Matunuck Beach Road that is impacting roads, businesses and residents.

SK breaks statewide trend, grows nearly 10 percent

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – According to new census figures released Wednesday, South Kingstown has seen the largest population growth in South County, adding 2,718 residents or a growth rate of 9.7 percent. The new figures brings South Kingstown’s population up to 30,639.
Town Manager Stephen A. Alfred contributed the population increase to the change in housing development and construction.
