Major patriotic gesture

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Ten years ago when two planes struck the World Trade Center in New York City, Joe Patrick volunteered to help the victims and first responders. Patrick stood in line for two days with steel workers, working 12 hour shifts, carrying debris from Ground Zero. He volunteered for a restaurant to bring lunch and dinner to the first responders and he attended the funerals of first responders to show their families that someone knew. Yet, Patrick did not think he did enough. Now as the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks approaches, Patrick will walk to the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia to Shankesville, Pennsylvania, to Ground Zero in New York to honor the befallen victims of Sept. 11, 2001.

Old Lighthouse Inn Restaurant roof collapses

NARRAGANSETT—The roof of the old Lighthouse Inn Restaurant at Point Judith collapsed Sunday, forcing the town to close the Rose Nulman Park, on which the building currently stands. The park has been a gathering point for tourists and residents alike who want to take in the impressive views of the Atlantic Ocean, yet the building itself has been closed since 1987.

Scarborough parking resolution approved

NARRAGANSETT—On Monday evening, the town council approved a motion to adopt parking changes in the Scarborough Hills area of Narragansett. Residents have expressed frustration with the oft-occurring disturbances that tourists cause by parking in the streets of the Scarborough Hills area.

SK School Committee, Union reach tentative agreement

As of 8:30 a.m. Friday morning, the South Kingstown School Committee and NEASK have reached a tentative agreement on a school contract.

The two negotiating teams met Thursday evening at 5 p.m. at Broad Rock Middle School and continued negotiations into the night. Details of the tentative agreement is currently confidential, however.

The union general membership will meet Aug. 11 to review the tentative agreement. The school committee will meet Aug. 16 during its regularly scheduled meeting to review the agreement as well.

Sunfish posing as sharks at Narragansett Town Beach?

NARRAGANSETT—Visitors to Narragansett Town Beach had something of a false alarm on Wednesday when a shark sighting was reported to the lifeguards at South Beach Pavilion. Lifeguards shut down the beach for about an hour in order to make sure that all of the beachgoers were safe, and no further shark sighting was reported.

School Committee, union discuss how to fill $755,000 deficit

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – At Tuesday night’s meeting between the school committee and union, the two parties discussed how to fill the $755,000 school deficient. This meeting was one of the four mediation meetings scheduled in August with mediator John Harrington.

Proposed RIPTA cuts impact South County routes

NARRAGANSETT—The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) has developed a cost-saving plan which will drastically reduce service to the smaller towns of South County. RIPTA representatives were available on Tuesday evening at Narragansett Town Hall to listen to the public’s comments and concerns regarding the bus cuts.

Although no longer pink, Goodies Ice Cream still a Galilee tradition

NARRAGANSETT – For six summers, those craving their favorite ice cream have taken refuge in the little pink cottage of Goodies Ice cream Shoppe on Sand Hill Cove Road in Narragansett. Yet, this summer ice cream lovers may be at a lost when they do not see that pink cottage. However, Goodies owner Cheryl Pelchat wants her customers to know Goodies is still here and only moved its location just one stop down at 236 Sandhill Cove Road from where the pink cottage used to be.

“It's a hop skitch and a jump away from the pink cottage,” Pelchat said.

Union files unfair labor practice charge against SK School Committee

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – After the School Committee filed a complaint in Washington Superior Court last Thursday against NEASK, the union took their own legal route by filing an unfair labor practice charge with the State Labor Board last week.

The charge sites bad faith or service bargaining against the school committee.

Ocean Special Area Management Plan receives federal approval

NARRAGANSETT—No one would disagree that the ocean is a valuable resource which accommodates multiple users, from schools of fish to archaeological surveys. Commercial fishermen, architectural firms, and university scientists are among the many competing parties who wish to preserve, understand, and utilize every facet of the ocean’s bounty. The Ocean Special Area Management Plan, or SAMP, is the first tool in the country which will help to negotiate these relationships.
