College Planning Center of Rhode Island plans on extending its hours

WARWICK-- The College Planning Center of Rhode Island (CPCRI) will extend operating hours beginning Jan. 4, 2011 to accommodate the rush of students and parents scurrying to get their Free Application for Federal Student Aid - more commonly referred to as the FAFSA - and other financial aid forms submitted prior to college deadlines.

The students at Washington Oak Elementary School have teamed up with members of the Sons of Italy to show their support to troops serving overseas this holiday season.
The students in Jessica O’Connell’s second grade class at the school worked on creating holiday cards for soldiers serving overseas as a classroom project. O’Connell instructed the children on card making strategies and discussed with them possibilities for inscriptions.
Under their teacher’s guidance, the students each made a card to send to the soldiers serving overseas this holiday season.

Stop strangers from buying homes the current owners can afford

“Why should a stranger be able to buy a home at a price the current homeowner can afford?”
So many times I am sitting at a closing table of a homeowner losing their home to short sale or foreclosure and their home is being sold at market value or even less. They see a stranger sitting across from them buying their home at a price they can afford if only they were offered the chance. All because they could not receive a loan modification or some program to help them stay in their home.
On behalf of many Americans who have lost the dream of homeownership, we need a plan to keep the homeowner in their home.

Izzo, 28, a Coventry native who now lives in New York, has captured the essence of our littlest state in her self-published book, “Ocean Sites and City Lights: A Collection of Photographs.”
It is visionary, scenic, historic; 120 pages of beaches, lighthouses, skylines, architecture, urban vignettes. You will see our state as only she can, in a way you hadn’t before.

 the festivities are here and we can barely keep up. This poses one of our biggest struggles: holiday shopping. Buying gifts for seniors has become increasingly difficult as they often already own what they want. However this year, a national survey from HISC has come to give us a hand.

There is the Bolivian émigré who has progressed from being a student to being a tutor for the past two years.
There is the Japanese student who has returned to Japan to help English-speaking visitors to her region. The Chinese émigré from Singapore who teaches Chinese in a local college and an elementary cultural program in a local school.

Karate kid Shannon mixes Christian music, and Mojo with Dojo for a winning combo

WARWICK, R.I. – Susie Shannon is a remarkable combo of Mojo and Dojo.
Shannon, just 9, a 4th grader at Hoxie Elementary School in Warwick, will test for her brown belt in karate next month; but on Tuesday, she released her debut album of Contemporary Christian music called, “I Live For You.”
“I couldn’t do this without my parents helping me to do my best and my friends from ShoDan Karate, especially Renshi Jay, teaching me to have the confidence to go for my dreams,” said Susie.

Knitting keeps others warm, knotting ties club together

For ten years the AOA club members have been giving of their time and their talents for members of the local community.
AOA stands for Active Older Adults, and that is certainly an understatement, in reference to this group. These active older adults which are comprised of women ranging in age from their late 50s to nearly 85 years old, get together once a week, on Friday mornings, for a knitting club. The members said that they do spend a good deal of time knitting during club meetings, but that is not all that they do. They also attend functions; hold community gatherings, fund raise, support local organizations, volunteer and get together simply for socialization.
