Town votes to assist in YMCA land purchase

CHARLESTOWN - A 27.7-acre chunk of wooded land with approximately 700 feet of shoreline on the eastern banks of Watchaug Pond is on its way to becoming publicly accessible and protected open space. The Charlestown Land Trust will buy the property from the Ocean Community YMCA, with the help of a $475,000 allocation from the town.

Substation explosion, fire in Wood River Junction

WOOD RIVER JUNCTION - Thousands of National Grid customers, including URI and Chariho High School, were without power for a short time on Monday morning after an explosion and subsequent fire badly damaged a transformer at the substation on Shumunkanuc Hill Road.

Maintenance dredging begins at Ninigret Pond

CHARLESTOWN - The shores of Ninigret Pond near the Charlestown Breach-way will be the site of heavy machinery and hard working crews for the next two months or so, and while it may look and sound like an industrial war-zone, the end result of the campaign could greatly benefit the pond’s natural habitat.

Hirst, Landolfi propose alternate district plan

HOPKINTON - The new district maps that were approved by the Rhode Island Reappointment Commission in December, 2011 will impact many cities and towns throughout the state. Hopkinton could be one of the communities most drastically affected by the redistricting, because it will become split between two house districts, 38 and 39, and have to add a fourth polling location in town.

RICHMOND - Carol Terranova’s beloved Yellow Lab Maggie was a rescue dog. While the pair spent many happy days together, Maggie passed away in December, 2011.

Longtime SRIN photographer Ray Clayton inducted into Rhode Island Press Association Hall of Fame

Southern Rhode Island Newspapers is proud to announce that longtime staff photographer Ray Clayton has been named one of three entrants into the Rhode Island Press Association’s Hall of Fame Class of 2012.
Clayton, who worked for SRIN for nearly 40 years as a fulltime photographer and freelanced for the Standard Times up until his death last December, will join East Bay Newspapers sports writer/photographer Manuel C. “Manny” Correira and retired Providence Journal business editor Joseph L. Goodrich as the latest inductees into the coveted hall.
