Endeavor marks 500th voyage

NARRAGANSETT—The University of Rhode Island’s research vessel Endeavor returned to port this past Tuesday, number 500 in the ship’s long career of transporting scientists throughout the world’s oceans and reporting back millions of pieces of quality, oceanographic data. The most recent trip, however, took a step further by bringing undergraduates along to experience life onboard conducting research.

Robbery defendant faces 35 years to serve for spree

SOUTH KINGSTOWN—Michael Brooks, 50, pleaded no contest to four counts of first degree robbery for holding up and robbing four elderly women in towns across South County in August 2010. Brooks, whose last known address was 125 Knowlesway Extension, Narragansett, was brought before Superior Court Justice William Carnes and sentenced to 40 years in prison with 35 as a maximum to serve.

Zoning Board gets fired up

RICHMOND - An application for a special use permit that would allow the construction of a proposed shooting range on Kingstown Road was presented to the zoning board at a meeting on Monday night, Oct. 24. After three hours of testimonies from professional witnesses, little was decided, and the meeting was continued to Monday, Nov. 14.

Four Chariho students injured in car crash

CHARLESTOWN - Four Chariho High School students suffered serious injuries and were hospitalized following a single-car crash that took place on Carolina Back Road (Route 112) during the early morning hours of Sunday, Oct. 23.

Pension plan unveiled by state leaders

PROVIDENCE – A new hybrid plan that combines a traditional pension guarantee with a 401(K)-style plan, a suspension of cost-of-living increases for Rhode Island’s retired government workers for up to 19 years, and a higher retirement age up to 67 years old for current workers 51 years of age are what Governor Lincoln D. Chafee and General Treasurer Gina M. Raimondo propose will save the state from its only 48 percent funded pension system and $7 billion unfunded liability.

Two men rescued off Hazard rocks

NARRAGANSETT—Narragansett Police and Fire Departments responded to a call of two men who slipped off of the rocks at Hazard Avenue on Saturday. NPD was first on the scene and observed the two men floating in the water 75 feet from the shore.

Tribe sues over slot parlor vote

The Narragansett Indian Tribe has taken a legal course of action as a result of its displeasure with the R.I. General Assembly’s approving of a referendum question for the November 2012 ballot that would ask voters whether to allow the Twin River slot parlor in Lincoln to have blackjack and other traditional table games.

Narragansetts attend "Carcieri fix" hearing

A Senate Indian Affairs Committee hearing was held in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, Oct. 13, to consider and review the countrywide effects of the 2009 Supreme Court decision in Carcieri v. Salazar that found Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar, did not have authority to take Narragansett Indian tribal land into federal trust.
