Unfinished business at Institute for Sport

NARRAGANSETT — Auditor General Dennis E. Hoyle released his audit report on Daniel E. Doyle, Jr.’s failure to repay funds to the both the University of Rhode Island and the state. Doyle, who has served at the Executive Director for the Institute of International Sport at URI since 1986, was audited after concerns were expressed to the Auditor General’s office about the unfinished state of the institute’s residential and coaching center, for which a state grant of $575,000 was given in 2007.

Town considering paying for DMS roof

NORTH KINGSTOWN – For the better part of a couple months now, North Kingstown school officials and town administrators have debated two key questions: Who’s going to pay for a new roof at Davisville Middle School and what account or bond it will come from?
Monday evening came the first glance at a potential solution.

This week, the South Kingstown School Committee decided to move the pre-school to South Road School, a switch from last year's plans.

Also, we have the story on how the state police are investigating the unfinished payments of the Institute for Sports to the University of Rhode Island. This week, it was reported the Institute packed up and left town.

After the governor proposed a two-percent hike in the meals tax, the Rhode Island Hospitality Association began a campaign against the proposal. This week they met South County restaurant owners at the Mews Tavern.

SCH says farewell to Molly the Therapy Dog

SOUTH KINGSTOWN –As Molly the Therapy Dog walked across the halls of South County Hospital, she lit the faces of hundreds of patients and stole the hearts of all she knew.

Twice a week Molly, wearing her red therapy dog vest, would visit the hospital to brighten the day of patients and staff. Over the years, Molly made a total of 925 visits, a record set by Therapy Dog International.

Accident on Torrey Road claims one victim

SOUTH KINGSTOWN—A motor vehicle accident which occurred early Wednesday morning has claimed the life of its rear seat passenger. Erica L. Knowles, 23, of 95 Wood Lane, South Kingstown, was pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital Wednesday. Two other persons were involved in the accident, the driver Dean Philbrick, 46, of 50 Harcourt Ave., Wakefield, and Rebecca Scott, 29, of 12 Lily Lane, Narragansett.

Town votes to assist in YMCA land purchase

February 16, 2012

CHARLESTOWN - A 27.7-acre chunk of wooded land with approximately 700 feet of shoreline on the eastern banks of Watchaug Pond is on its way to becoming publicly accessible and protected open space. The Charlestown Land Trust will buy the property from the Ocean Community YMCA, with the help of a $475,000 allocation from the town.
