Every presidential year, it seems, a debate starts up about the curious constitutional custom of the Electoral College.
Because the Founding Fathers were scared silly about putting real power in the hands of the great unwashed (which, to be fair, was significantly illiterate, ill-informed and unfamiliar with the whole concept of self-government in the late 1700s), they concluded that the states would elect presidents rather than having a popular vote of the citizens.

SK’s own Jim Norman to be inducted into RI Radio Hall of Fame

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – In 1952 Jim Norman began broadcasting football and basketball games for the University of Rhode Island as an undergraduate student.

Sixty years later, Norman, the retired URI director of sports information and commercial radio “Voice of the Rams,” has become a familiar voice to generations of fans who listened to his play-by-play of Ram athletics and synonymous with radio broadcasting in Rhode Island.

NK names its police officer, firefighters of the year

NORTH KINGSTOWN - Every year the North Kingstown Rotary Club, honors a North Kingstown police officer and firefighter of the year. This year’s honorees included an two-time winner of the award and a group of 10 firefighters who assisted in a confined-space rescue of two men.
Detective Sergeant Jeffrey St. Onge previously received the police officer of the year award in 1999 after responding to a stand-off on Bea Drive in town and in 2007 when he was working on internet fraud and embezzlement cases where he was able to uncover over $100,000 of fraud within the town.

Costa fighting Board of Governors

NORTH KINGSTOWN – Last September, the Rhode Island Board of Governors for Higher Education approved a controversial bill to allow undocumented immigrants to pay in-state tuition rates at the state’s colleges and the University of Rhode Island.
If Rep. Doreen Costa (R-North Kingstown and Exeter) has her way, however, that bill will soon be repealed.
