Meadowbrook repairs to get surplus money?

January 9, 2011

With decisions on what to do with the school budget surplus and the Meadowbrook Farm Elementary School roof and floor situation looming, the School Committee and the district’s School Building Committee will be getting together for a joint meeting next week.
The work session, with school project funding recommendations on the agenda for discussion, will be held Tuesday at 6 p.m. at East Greenwich High School’s guidance suite.
While the School Committee has already requested permission from the Town Council to use one third of the estimated $6 million surplus from the $52 million school bond on roof replacement at the high school and Frenchtown Elementary School, the school boards will be discussing other priorities Tuesday.
A potential $4 million worth of work at Meadowbrook, involving both replacement of the roof and replacement of a deteriorating floor system. is the most expensive piece of the puzzle. The daunting cost of the work has had school officials considering retirement of the 40-year-old building, but enrollment and classroom space studies have quieted talk of closing the school.
Building Committee Chairman Jay Gowell said his board has had difficulty in finding a consensus on what to do about Meadowbrook, while School Committee Chairwoman Deidre Gifford is hoping to make a decision on the school sometime this month.
Gowell said the original cost of the Meadowbrook roof replacement, $1 million, has ballooned to the $3-4 million range.

Skippers take down Chargers in girls basketball

January 8, 2011

Chariho knew it'd be facing a ton of pressure from the North Kingstown girls basketball team's defense Friday night.
It didn't matter what the Chargers knew - because the Skippers executed their game plan perfectly.
Switching from a zone press to man-to-man after the Chargers were breaking their press, the Skippers forced turnover after turnover - 29 in all - in a 58-40 win over Chariho Friday night.
The game was tied at four when the Skippers made the switch, and once they did they held Chariho without a field goal for the next six minutes, 44 seconds, taking a 19-8 lead in the process.

Avengers hockey falls to Cumberland

January 8, 2011

It all happened so fast.
Down 1-0, the East Greenwich hockey team gave up three goals in a 2 minute, 44 second span early in the second period and couldn't recover in a 6-2 loss to Cumberland Friday night at West Warwick Civic Center.
After a solid first period, EG gave up a goal just 1:47 into the second period and once Cumberland's scoring train got rolling, it couldn't be stopped. The Clippers scored 25 seconds later and ended the binge with 10:29 left in the period.

oakers take control of Division II

January 8, 2011

WEST WARWICK — Coventry’s Zach Levesque was in middle school the last time he scored four goals in a hockey game.
Last night, it was déjà vu for the 5-foot, 6-inch senior as he scored all four goals for the Oakers in a 4-0 shutout over the Middletown Islanders.

Oaker girls can't handle La Salle's press

January 7, 2011

COVENTRY — The scoreboard with 11 minutes, 33 seconds left in Friday’s game showed the improvement the Coventry girls basketball team has made since the beginning of December.
Even though the Oakers had been heavily outplayed by visiting La Salle, they were still only down six points with a chance to cut the deficit even further.
La Salle went on to run away with the Division I-South contest 53-37 thanks to their full-court, man-to-man defense, but the Oakers showed with some offensive refinement they could be a team that competes for a playoff spot in a very tough division.

Stitchell, Oakers back on track

January 7, 2011

COVENTRY — There was a palpable sense of relief emanating from the Coventry boys basketball team’s locker room after Friday night’s Division I crossover contest with Mt. Pleasant.
Friday’s game may have finished just the first third of the season, but for coach Tom Campbell and the Oakers, Friday’s game was nearly a must-win after dissipating losses to La Salle and Smithfield where the Oakers had a lead in the second half and blew it.
