August 16, 2012

It’s not going to be easy replacing a legend.
But Toby Gibbons is ready to take on the challenge.
After 21 seasons and three state titles, Jim Kelly retired as South Kingstown girls soccer coach in the offseason and Gibbons – who also serves as the head coach for the hockey and golf teams at SK – replaces him and is ready to make a mark of his own.

Prout names O'Malley boys basketball coach

August 15, 2012

The biggest move in Rhode Island high school basketball this offseason was Eric Simonelli’s departure from Prout up north to La Salle.
Replacing him wasn’t going to be easy, but first-year Prout athletic director Mike Traficante thinks the school – and the program – have their man.
After a summer of searching, Traficante told The Times Wednesday that Westerly boys basketball assistant coach Jed O’Malley will take over for Simonelli this season, beating out two other finalists for the job.

Curmudgeon's Corner: Feedback is far more credible with a signature (OPINION)

In the years I have been writing this op-ed I recall receiving only two letters and several emails. The latter have been mostly complimentary.

White Nose Syndrome threatens local bat colony

August 13, 2012

WEST GREENWICH - The Woodville Barn at the University of Rhode Island W. Alton Jones Campus has been the spring and summer home for a thriving maternal colony of little brown bats for a very long time. Every March or April, the same colony returns to roost in the barn for the warmer months, and each member of the colony, which is females only, returns from its far away hibernation ready to bear one pup. It is a truly fascinating life cycle.

Disc golf legend rolls through Rhode Island

August 13, 2012

RICHMOND - On Tuesday man played the Willow Valley Disc Golf Course in Richmond unlike any other man that has ever played it before.
