Final commission report on EGHS released

The fifteen educators, who made an on-site evaluation of East Greenwich High School on April 10 through April 13, have submitted their final report, Principal Michael Podraza announced today. The evaluation visit took place under the direction of the Commission on Public Secondary Schools of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). The visiting committee was chaired by Dr. Edmund Higgins, Professor at Quinnipiac University and included educators from various New England states.

NARRAGANSETT—The town council recently received and recognized the draft report of the 2011 Citizen Attitude Survey Report which was administered by the ETC Institute, a market research firm based out of Kansas. The town implemented the survey in order to gauge how citizens viewed the efficiency and quality of town services, and also to look to the future in making such services better.

Woody Hill restoration nearly done

EXETER –Virginia Barber Laiho, 84, has fond memories of attending the one-room Woody Hill School off Route 165 in the western part of town.
“It was very interesting,” she says, “because we used to live across the street from the school. I would go over early to get the fire started in the cast-iron stove. The kids would walk or ride in the milk cart and the teachers lived with different families. One lived with us for two years; she had a room and ate with us.”

Woodville Road Bridge reconstruction complete

HOPKINTON–Crossing the Wood River at the Hopkinton/Richmond town line just became a whole lot easier. The Woodville Road Bridge has been reopened, Rep. Brian Patrick Kennedy (Dist. 38 – Hopkinton) announced in conjunction with the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) last week.

NORTH KINGSTOWN—It would be hard to blame Francie Christophersen if her focus isn’t exactly on this year’s Wickford Art Festival.
Now in its 49th year, the Festival has become one of the signature summer events in Rhode Island and, next year, for the big 50th anniversary, Christophersen and her cohorts at the Wickford Art Association are likely going to want to pull out all the stops for that special milestone.

A beach without a bathhouse

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – As the last remaining pieces of the old beach pavilion at East Matunuck State Beach are trucked away this week, some beach goers are feeling disgruntled by the upheaval of their beach stay.
While East Matunuck beach lovers visit the state beach this summer they may be surprised to find less parking, no concession stand and only port-a-johns as construction of the new pavilion is underway up until next May 2012.

State budget approved: status quo for Chariho

The new state budget for the fiscal year 2012 is officially in place. The bill was signed by Gov. Lincoln Chafee on Thursday, June 30, and passed into law just one day before the beginning of the fiscal year (July 1, 2011 - June 30, 2012).
