Curmudgeon's Corner: ‘Buffet Rule’ shows Obama ready for class warfare (OPINION)

May 9, 2012

For the first time in over 25 years, I did not vote in the “presidential preference primary” last month. I don’t know about you but I am already tired of this year’s election.
After months of negative campaigning, Mitt Romney appears to have the GOP nomination sewed up. His attention already is focused on differentiating himself from the incumbent, Barak Obama, who has been fundraising and campaigning at taxpayer expense for over a year.

Ham, eggs, jonnycakes are staples of May Breakfast

May 7, 2012

NORTH KINGSTOWN – Millie Fountain was not in the kitchen of the First Baptist Church of North Kingstown for its traditional May Breakfast last Saturday.
No, in an unlikely scene, Millie was sitting down as the Tower Hill-based Baptists unofficially kicked off the local season wherein churches, fraternal organizations, schools and civic groups produce countless country breakfasts. The Rhode Island custom of gathering for a massive chow-down began in 1867 and has raised funds for a host of projects.

May 6, 2012

By JAMES BESSETTE

WEST KINGSTON — Early Saturday morning, just as the sun was about to peak over the trees near the flag meadow at Camp Hoffman, hundreds of Girl Scouts – both young and old – from three area communities gathered around to see the American flag get hoisted up the flag pole by the color guard consisting of members of East Greenwich Girl Scout Troop 609.
From there, the scouts recited the Pledge of Allegiance, as well as the Girl Scout Promise, pledging to both serve the country and help others in need as scouts.

Budget approved amidst ongoing turmoil at SK Town Hall

May 4, 2012

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – In a 4-0-1 vote, the South Kingstown Town Council approved the $89 million budget for next year, including the $7,000 tax contribution to the Southern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce.
As an executive board member of the Thundermist Health Center which received $24,000 in the budget, Town Councilor Mary Eddy recused herself from the vote.

The good news of the FY 2012-2013 budget – a zero percent tax increase – became overshadowed by the four-month dispute of the chamber tax request.
